CHAMBERTIN CLOS DE BÈZE

2016 Grand Cru Domaine Faiveley

EN PRIMEUR

A rich, powerful version, backed by flashy oak and beefy tannins that sandwich the flavors of black cherry, blackberry, licorice, iron and tobacco. Concentrated, yet vibrant and long. Drinking range: 2024 - 2050 Rating: 98 Bruce Sanderson, The Wine Spectator (Feb 2019)

Cask sample. Light to mid crimson. Sweet, ripe, vanilla-laced cherry fruit. Dry finesse, lots of tannin but the texture is very, very fine. Subtle, supple and dry. Not yet showing itself but all in place. Drinking range: 2026 - 2038 Rating: 17.5+ Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Feb 2018)

Bright, dark red-ruby. Knockout sappy nose combines black raspberry, crushed rock and white pepper. Boasts remarkable intensity and clarity--not to mention class--to its flavors of raspberry, spices and pungent minerals. Wonderfully sappy and dense but almost magically light on its feet. This sharply delineated wine finishes with ineffable rising perfume and outstanding length. This wine manages to combine the best traits of Faiveley's other Gevrey grand crus--not to mention the finest qualities of the 2016 vintage--in an utterly weightless package. Rating: 94-97 Stephen Tanzer, www.vinousmedia.com (Jan 2018)

(from a 1.29 ha parcel). This is softly oaky with a wonderfully spicy array of black cherry, pungent earth and evident sauvage nuances that can be found on the impressively rich and seductively textured broad-shouldered and concentrated flavors that coat the palate with extract, all wrapped in a balanced, long and deep finish. I very much like the way this fans out on the strikingly persistent finish. Note that plenty of patience is a requisite here and it would be largely pointless to open a bottle before its 10th anniversary. Drinking range: 2036 - Rating: 93-96 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2018)

Floral aroma...alluring rose petal. Rich strike to the palate. Succulent, full-bodied and really rather opulent. This is a generous and powerful Beze with lots of fragrance and with the tannins to support the structure. Minerals on the finish. Score 19.75 28/29th September harvest. ie between Rousseau and Pierre Damoy Rating: 19.75 Sarah Marsh MW, The Burgundy Briefing (Nov 2017)

The “perfect” wine does of course not exist, however this clos-de-bèze comes pretty close. The wine presents rich, refined aromas of flowers, spices and perfectly ripe black fruits. Its beautifully concentrated palate doesn’t contain a single harsh note. Velvety tannins that appear both wonderfully sweet and fresh, with a beautiful fruity aroma of cherries, and an exceptionally long finish… A very, very great wine!

Is the 2016 superior to the 2015? In the clos-de-bèze, Faiveley owns 1 hectare, 23 acres, 47 cents of vines planted in 1955, 1966 and 1983. The vines did not freeze in 2016, but followed a normal vegetative cycle allowing the grapes to produce a perfect yield of 34hl/ha. “Despite the late harvest of September 28th, the grapes were extremely ripe, with 13.2 degrees of natural sugars and perfectly healthy. After being entirely destemmed, the grapes are fermented in tanks for about three weeks and the élevage is done in 60% of new oak barrels. People are focusing on the 2015s, which is great, however they’ll quickly come to realise that 2016 is also an exceptional vintage, superior to 2015 in many ways,” assures Jérôme Flous, Faiveley’s technical director

The Faiveley family are the largest vineyard owners in Burgundy, owning around 120ha, spread across the Côtes de Nuits, Beaune and Chalonnaise and encompassing everything from generic Bourgogne up to the grandest of Grand Crus. Their holdings supply the grapes for 5 out of every 6 bottles made by Faiveley, the balance being bought in from carefully selected contract growers.
