CHAMBERTIN

2016 Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru Domaine Christophe Perrot-Minot

EN PRIMEUR

Half of the fruit here was lost to frost. What is left is excellent. Just 'Wow!' on the nose - picture-perfect fruit. balanced, open and so inviting. Follows to the palate. Gorgeously poised fruit. Hard strawberries, no tartness though. red fruit, lovely texture, some sinew, some whole bunch notes giving a tad of structure, but completely gorgeous. Poise and power in perfect harmony. Already completely delicious. 'Promising' says Christophe! He is right, its delicious. The perfect example. Just gorgeous. L&S (Oct 2017)

Saturated dark red. Wonderfully vibrant aromas of medicinal black cherry, menthol, bitter chocolate and crushed rock. More imploded and less fleshy in the early going than the overwhelming majority of Perrot-Minots 2015s and a brilliant example of its vintage, offering explosive yet tight-grained flavors of black fruits and salty minerals that fill the mouth without leaving any impression of weight. Finishes with firm but noble tannins, outstanding building length and compelling tension and floral perfume; really saturates the mouth and vibrates. This is less plush and thick than the 2016 Clos de Bèze today but may be even longer. Rating: 95-98 Stephen Tanzer, www.vinousmedia.com (Jan 2018)

(from purchased grapes that Perrot has the right to intercede with certain aspects of the viticulture). This is aromatically quite similar to the Clos de Bèze except that there are few spice elements but more floral character. The powerful, muscular and almost painfully intense broad-bodied flavors possess a copious amount of dry extract that coats the palate while partially buffering the markedly firm tannins on the super saline and mineral-driven finish that is perhaps even long. This is presently a solid block of material that will require at least a decade to be approachable and two of them before this will fully peak but even so, if you’ve got the patience this should be a really special wine in time. Drinking range: 2036 - Rating: 93-96 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2018)

The 2016 Chambertin Grand Cru was picked at the end of the first week in October, although there was nothing Christophe could do about losing half the crop to frost. It has a very perfumed, floral, pure bouquet with ebullient redcurrant, cranberry and pomegranate aromas suffused with mineral scents. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, fine tannin. The is an understated Chambertin built around poise and tension, long but need deep like the 2015, although you can feel the mouth tingling with the mineralité 30 seconds after the wine has departed. Excellent. Drinking range: 2020 - 2040 Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2017)

This is pure, strictly edged, straight and very contained. It is long and channelled and very fine. Very precise across the palate. Vitality and tension and great persistence. Drinking range: 2025 - Rating: 19.85 Sarah Marsh MW, The Burgundy Briefing (Nov 2017)

Christophe Perrot-Minot is now the fourth generation of his family producing wine on the estate after his great grandfather Amédée Merme devoted himself to the management and production of wine over 130 years ago. The estate has gone from strength to strength – always keeping the highest standards. Integrated viticulture has been practiced for many years now which has been adapted especially for the terroir. No herbicide or chemical fertilizer is used, instead, Christophe prefers to “stand back and listen to this terroir, only intervening when necessary or when the weather requires it, never systematically.” This is one of the star domaines of the whole of Burgundy.
