CHAMBOLLE MUSIGNY

2016 1er Cru Les Amoureuses Domaine Joseph Drouhin

EN PRIMEUR

Candles left over from the Chablis operation were used here to save the crop. Super polished, great fruit weight. V sexy. Good impact. Ripe and ample - good density too - there's an impressive heft. But made up of deliciously sweet and dark fruit - no hard edges. Nice persistent flow finishes bright and full of finesse - clever stuff. Big yet fine. L&S (Dec 2017)

An exceptionally fresh and bright nose mixes ultra-pure red berry fruit aromas with those of similar spice and floral notes. The mouth feel is slightly finer than that of the Petits Monts as the mid-palate is suave and supple yet the gorgeously textured backend tightens up considerably and displays superb intensity on the mouth coating and stony finish. This classy and lacy effort should also be very special. Drinking range: 2026 - Rating: 94 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Apr 2018)

So perfumed and floral such as roses. Enticing. Full-bodied yet so refined and wonderful with dusty-textured tannins at the front of the mouth. Dense yet so polished and beautiful. Flows on the palate. Fantastic to taste now but will be great in three or four years. Rating: 98 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Feb 2018)

Light to mid cherry red. Beautifully scented, with a light floral note as well as the red fruit and just slightly stemmy. Refined but dry in texture, deep in fruit to counterbalance the tannins. The tannins are sweet on the finish, gently chewy. Drinking range: 2022 - 2034 Rating: 17.5 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Feb 2018)

The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses has a beautiful bouquet with tightly wound violet-tinged black fruit, becoming a little more earthy and introverted with aeration. The palate is sensual and rounded on the entry with veins of blueberry and cassis that soon give way to quite a spicy and powerful finish. While not in the same class as the previous two vintages, this is still a serious, quite cerebral yet luxuriant Amoureuses that is beautifully crafted. Drinking range: 2021 - 2040 Rating: 93-95 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2017)

Joseph Drouhin, founded in 1880 and still family owned, are one of the most well-respected names in Burgundy, especially through their flagship wine, the iconic Clos des Mouches.

A huge part of the Drouhin production comes from their own domaine fruit (78 hectares), and much of the rest comes from contracts such as that with the Marquis de Laguiche, who shook hands with the grandfather of the current generation, agreeing to let him manage his vineyards which included an important part of Le Montrachet; this collaboration endures. Today, the fourth generation is at the helm

Small refinements continue to be made here. The presses have been changed - a reversion to basket pressing for the reds, and for whites the presses are open - along with a number of other growers they are following the trend to think that slight oxidation of the juice before fermentation is not a problem and may add complexity as well as avoiding later problems of premature oxidation in bottle.

For the reds there has been the introduction of selective whole-bunch fermentation in the Côte de Nuits wines. The house style remains one that 'emphasises the natural elegance of great Burgundies' as they describe it. The domaine is all cultivated with an organic and biodynamic approach.
