Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Fronsac & Canon Fronsac

85% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc. Very distinctive: real class in the depth and darkness of the fruit. Silky velvet feel with quite a crunchy structure and a nice freshening acidity. Extremely good value. Drinking range: 2020 - 2032 Rating: 90-92 L&S (Mar 2017)

Deep plum purple-colored, the 2016 Château Dalem is another terrific vintage for this cuvée, which comes from an 18-hectare vineyard in Fronsac. Crème de cassis, classic oak, violets, and hints of graphite all emerge from this incredibly classy, balanced, seamless Fronsac that's up with the finest of the vintage. Beautifully balanced and layered, those that are oak adverse should give bottles 2-3 years in the cellar. It should keep for 10-15+ years. The 2016 is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc that spent 18 months in 40% new French oak. Drinking range: 2019 - 2034 Rating: 93 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Feb 2019)

The 2016 Dalem is a flamboyant, unctuous wine. Super-ripe black cherry, chocolate, blackberry, grilled herbs, menthol, licorice and incense all run though this opulent, unapologetically full-throttle Fronsac. Dalem is one of the most overt, voluptuous wines of the year. I find it utterly irresistible. Tasted two times. Drinking range: 2018 - 2026 Rating: 93 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Jan 2019)

The 2016 Dalem has an intense bouquet of well-defined black cherry, raspberry coulis and marmalade aromas. The palate is well balanced with juicy ripe black fruit, a fine bead of acidity, plenty of freshness and fine attack on the finish. This is an excellent Dalem and comes recommended. Fronsac at its best. Drinking range: 2022 - 2038 Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2019)

Château Dalem

Brigitte Roullier-Loussert runs this property with enthusiasm, having taken over from her father, Michel Rullier, who bought it in 1955 from the family that had owned it for the previous three centuries. The estate dates back to 1610, making it one with one of the longest histories in the Bordeaux area, and has a rather lovely 'chateau' in the form of an eighteenth century manor house.

The vineyard Brigitte inherited in 2002 was around 15 hectares of south and south-west facing slopes, planted with Merlot and around 10% Cabernet Franc. She bought a further 11 hectares in 2015, and then 10 more in 2018, so has more than doubled the size of the property, building a new winery and driving the quality here so that it is now one of the most exciting names in Fronsac.
