Quite full and ripe, it has a fairly simple but warmly rounded ripe fruit - ripe but not excessive, very Merlot and round and plump, but still straight. A little more tannin and warmth surfacing on the finish. Drinking range: 2024 - 2034 Rating: 90-91 L&S (Apr 2017)

he 2016 Faugères was already showing extremely well a year ago, but now it seems to be showing what it can really do! It has a more classically trained bouquet featuring reserved blackberry and wild strawberry fruit, plus veins of undergrowth, autumn leaves and morels. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Supremely well focused, conveying impressive tension and energy on the finish. Outstanding. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. Drinking range: 2022 - 2042 Rating: 94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Aug 2020)

A perennial winner that always delivers fruit and texture, the 2016 Château Faugères checks in as 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, representing 60% of the total production, aged in 50% new French oak. Loads of black (and some blue) fruits give way to a medium to full-bodied Saint-Emilion that has classic damp earth, tobacco and violet notes, remarkable purity, fine tannins, and considerable finesse and elegance. Drink it any time over the coming 15+ years. It’s worth noting that Stephan von Neipperg consults on vineyard management, with Michel Rolland providing input on harvest dates winemaking, aging, and final blend. Drinking range: 2019 - 2034 Rating: 92 Jeb Dunnuck - www.robertparker.com (Feb 2019)

The 2016 Faugeres is a blend of 85% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon matured in 60% new oak. It has a ripe black cherry and cassis scented bouquet, just a touch of volatility although that should disappear by the time it is in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry. This has good backbone and fresh acidity, nicely focused with a taut, quite linear finish that feels more restrained and classic in style than previous vintages. Superb. Drinking range: 2023 - 2045 Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2017)

Château Faugères

Château Faugères spreads across the appellation divide between St Emilion and the Côtes de Castillon and, consequently, produces examples of each. Long time in the ownership of the Guisez family, Faugères was bought in 1995 by Swiss businessman Silvio Denz who, together with his friend Comte Stephan von Neipperg and well-known consultant Michel Rolland, have driven the estate's reputation forward. To this end, more vineyards have been purchased and a brand new state of the art winery built. Four wines are produced at Château Faugères - the "grand vin", Château Faugères, 85% Merlot; a second wine, Haut Faugères; a super-premium 100% Merlot Parker-pleasing wine, Cuvée Spéciale Péby, named after Péby Guisez; and the produce of their Côtes de Castillon vineyards Cap de Faugères.
