51% Cabernet, 41% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot. Quite surly when approached at the various Union des Grands Crus tastings but at La Ferrière, it shrugged off any homesickness and reminded us why this gently assertive Margaux is such good value for money. Dark, ripe, sweet cassis Cabernet lies behind the muscular tannins but real elegance, freshness and finesse on the finish. Everything in proportion. Claire Villars-Lurton kindly gave us a 1996 and 2004 to have with lunch. Both terrific in their own right and looking at their current market value, still incredibly affordable for a top Margaux. Add 20 years of winemaking experience gained since the 1996 and you'd have to be bonkers not to buy the 2016 which could be one of the finest wines made here. Rating: 91-93 L&S (Apr 2017)

The 2016 Ferrière is a dense, full-bodied wine that is going to need at least a few years in bottle to shed some of its tannins. Old vines imbue the 2016 with a palpable sense of power and resonance that comes through in the wine's dark, somber personality. The tannins are equally imposing though, so patience is essential. Blackberry, smoke and gravel are some of the notes that build as the 2016 starts to open in the glass. Drinking range: 2024 - 2041 Rating: 93 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Jan 2019)

The 2016 Ferrière has a light but focused bouquet with a fine graphite seam that runs through the black fruit; light gravelly notes emerge with aeration. The nicely balanced palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, sage and spices and a solid, slightly sinewy (for a Margaux) finish. Very fine. Drinking range: 2022 - 2042 Rating: 91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2019)

The 2016 Ferriere is an accomplished Margaux for the vintage. It has a feminine, refined bouquet with blackberry, wild strawberry and light rose petal aromas, just a hint of vanilla from the new oak that is neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, quite juicy tannin. This is very harmonious with fine tannin, impressive depth and a sense of mineralité that is in tune with this vintage. I thought that the 2015 Ferriere was excellent, but this is another step up. Bravo, Clare Villars Lurton! Drinking range: 2021 - 2045 Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2017)

Château Ferrière

Margaux Troisième cru 1855 The Ferrière family owned their eponymous estate from its origins in the 18th Century right up until 1914. During the 20th Century, Château Ferrière's star fell considerably with the vineyard leased to Alexis Lichine and the wine made at Château Lascombes, and Château Ferrière was rarely seen or known outside France. Ferrière was purchased by the Taillan Group (who own, among others, Gruaud-Larose and Chasse-Spleen) in 1988, and the story since then has been of continued improvement. The connection with Château Lascombes was ended and all wines are made at Château Ferrière now. Château Ferrière is the smallest of the Cru Classé estates, with just 8ha of vines dispersed around the centre of Margaux village. 80% are Cabernet Sauvignon, with 15% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. The Grand Vin spends 18 months in wood (60% new). Both in terms of quality and availability, Château Ferrière is unrecognisable from where it was a few short years ago. Classic, gently assertive Margaux and excellent value for money.
