2016 Cru Bourgeois Supérieur Margaux

Grapes Merlot, Cab Franc, Cab Sauv
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Margaux
Classification Cru Bourgeois Supérieur

A very attractive, simple but well crafted fruit driven Margaux from the same stable as La Ferrière which is a bit like having your Peugeot maintained by Ferrari. Rugby, Grand Prix, Sunday lunch, whatever reason you need. If you want an epically good, budget friendly Margaux on the table to impress and enjoy then this is your Jonny Wilkinson. Rarely misses the spot. Drinking range: 2023 - 2033 Rating: 90-91 L&S (Apr 2017)

The 2016 La Gurgue has a pretty bouquet with blackberry, violets and a touch of strawberry pastilles, although I would have liked just a little more intensity on this Margaux. The palate is medium-bodied with edgy, slightly rigid tannin. It does not quite "flow" like others. For example, I am much more taken with the Villars family's superb Chasse-Spleen this year, and it could benefit from a touch more fruité on the finish. Good, but I have fonder memories of the 2015 La Gurgue twelve months ago. Drinking range: 2020 - 2030 Rating: 87-89 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2017)

Mid crimson. Lightish in weight but quite luscious in terms of ripeness. Floral top note. Pretty and Margaux with a light touch even if not that dramatic. Drinking range: 2025 - 2034 Rating: 16.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2017)

A touch airy in feel, this features bergamot and cherry notes, backed by lightly dusty grip and a flash of incense on the finish. Pretty, but a bit shy on depth. Rating: 86-89 James Molesworth, The Wine Spectator (Apr 2017)

Château La Gurgue

Despite having two former Mayors of Margaux among previous owners, and a location right in the heart of the appellation, Château La Gurgue was not marked by particular greatness until recent times, registering not more than Cru Bourgeois status in the infamous 1855 classification. Now, however, in common ownership with Château Haut Bages Libéral and Château Ferrière and under the benign stewardship of Claire Villars-Lurton, La Gurgue has rightfully assumed position as a property to watch in the always popular appellation of Margaux. 10ha of vineyard, planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, abut in many places the vineyards of the illustrious Château Margaux.
