CHÂTEAU MARSAU

2016 Côtes des Francs

IN STOCK
Grapes Merlot
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Côtes des Francs
ABV 14.5%

100% Merlot on a buttonhole of purple clay in the Côtes de Francs. Very deep purple thick juice. Lively expression. Lots of weight and jolliness for this bargain-basement price. They think this is the best wine they have ever made here, and you ave to remember that Robert Parker himself asked 'is this the Petrus of the Cotes de Francs?' of the 2010. Drinking range: 2023 - 2030 Rating: 90-92 L&S (Apr 2017)

*Case price discount: Mix any 12 bottles of wine (or 9 litre equivalent) or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits, Sweet Wine or Fortified (4.5 litres) to get the discounted 'case price' for each bottle.

The 2016 Marsau, which is pure Merlot picked 7-15 October, undergoes a soft extraction and now tends to be blended earlier during the élevage. It has a lovely nose of brambly black fruit, lively and well defined with a pastille-like purity, a second bottle showing a touch of camphor. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, tightly wound blackberry and raspberry fruit with a light, slightly linear finish. I probably like the 2015 better last year but it is still a well made Francs Côtes de Bordeaux that belongs to the Chadronnier family, owners of Bordeaux merchant CVBG. Drinking range: 2020 - 2028 Rating: 87-89 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2017)

This is a rich and dense Marsau and probably the best ever. Full body and a wonderful depth of fruit and chocolate. Love the texture and intensity. Shows sophistication. Rating: 93-94 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2017)

This sports a fleshy feel, with warm plum and cassis notes supported by a fresh chalky spine. Shows good energy through the finish. Sneakily long. Rating: 90-93 James Molesworth, The Wine Spectator (Apr 2017)

Château Marsau

Château Marsau is a well-known property in the small Bordeaux sub-region of the Côtes de Francs, but part of the property extends across the Départmental border into Dourdogne and is, thus, in AC Bergerac. This portion is the "Enclos de Bernerderie" and is planted with Cabernet Franc.
