The 2016 Moulin Riche has a very well-defined bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit laced with crushed stone and subtle cedar aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit and a little chewy on the midpalate. The muscular finish suggests that this needs another couple of years in bottle. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting. Drinking range: 2021 - 2032 Rating: 89 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Aug 2020)

From the team at Léoville Poyferré, the 2016 Château Moulin Riche checks in as 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot, all from a terroir slightly more inland with more clay soils. Aged 20 months in 25% new French oak, it’s a medium to full-bodied, ripe, sexy effort that has powerful notes of cassis, blackcurrants, graphite, and dried soil, with maybe a hint of tobacco. With bright yet integrated acidity, beautiful fruit, and building tannins, it’s a terrific, impeccably made wine to enjoy over the coming 20+ years. Drinking range: 2019 - 2039 Rating: 92 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Feb 2019)

In 2016 Moulin Riche is absolutely gorgeous. Fresh, vibrant and full of energy, the 2016 is impressive today. The wine appears to have shed some baby fat and gained in aromatic complexity over the last two years. Sweet red-toned fruit, rose petal, mint and chalk lend understatement to the classy, mid-weight Saint-Julien. The 2016 was bottled at the end of May (earlier than many other Left Bank wines) and might be entering a period of closure. Still, I find a lot to admire. Drinking range: 2021 - 2036 Rating: 92 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Jan 2019)
