CHÂTEAU PIBRAN

2016 Cru Bourgeois Pauillac

Grapes Merlot, Cab Sauv
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Pauillac
Classification Cru Bourgeois

55% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon. Bold and fleshy. Broad black north Pauillac style, tasting very Cabernet despite being majority Merlot. Dark chunky build-up. Some very firm density at the core. A rather classical big-boned Pauillac. Christian Seely describes this as 'quite old-fashioned' and says that there is some quite chalky ground they have thought of grafting over to Sémillon and making a white, which might explain some of the firmness in its heart. Drinking range: 2024 - 2035 Rating: 89-91 L&S (Apr 2017)

Loads of cassis, graphite, and pencil lead notes dominate the bouquet of the 2016 Château Pibran, which is deeply colored, full-bodied, and nicely textured on the palate. It’s another incredibly classy wine from the northern regions of the Médoc that has enough fruit and texture to offer pleasure today, yet will benefit from short-term cellaring and cruise in cold cellars. Drinking range: 2023 - 2048 Rating: 92+ Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Feb 2019)

The 2016 Pibran is a blend of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon picked between 4 and 18 October, and matured in 50% new oak for what will be a total of 18 months. It offers plenty of ripe black cherry and blackcurrant aromas on the nose, a touch of blueberry and a light patisserie (choux pastry?) emanating from the new oak that will be subsumed with time. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannin, a structured and more masculine Pibran compared to the 2015 with fine salinity and "bite" on the finish. This will benefit and meliorate throughout its barrel maturation and I am sure it will give 15-20 years of drinking pleasure. Drinking range: 2020 - 2040 Rating: 90-92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2017)

55% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon – more Merlot than usual because of lower yields of Cabernet Sauvignon. 50% new oak. Snazzy dark crimson. Insistent nose bursting with the scents of vegetation (but not green and underripe) with lots of energy and life. Not rich and with lighter tannin content and more sweetness than the St-Estèphes I have just been tasting but a pretty nice glass of wine. Very slightly sweet on the end. Meant for early drinking. Drinking range: 2024 - 2032 Rating: 16.5+ Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2017)

Château Pibran

Château Pibran, now under the guidance Christian Seely and the AXA-Millesimes team, produces with good complexity, weight and concentration. Its 9.5 hectares of vineyards stretch across a well-drained gravel bank and border those of Mouton-Rothschild, Lynch-Bages and Pontet Canet. They are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (25%), Cabernet Franc (10%) and Petit Verdot (5%). The wines are vinified at Pichon-Baron. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and the wine is matured for 12-15 months in barriques (50% new). Pibran is classified as a cru bourgeois but is now producing wines the equal of many of its more highly classified neighbours.
