CHÂTEAU SIGALAS RABAUD

2016 1er Cru Classé Sauternes

Colour White
Origin France, Bordeaux
Village Sauternes
Classification 1er Cru Classé

The 2016 Château Sigalas-Rabaud felt a little straightforward on the nose, floral but just missing the depth and concentration of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with tangerine and clementine on the entry, a tang of lemongrass towards the finish that perks things up and suggests that there is better to come once this Sauternes is in bottle. Drinking range: 2021 - 2050 Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2017)

Lots of acidity dominates the nose. Heavy charges of both sweetness and acidity are not yet married – more like lemon cough sweets for the moment. Drinking range: 2026 - 2040 Rating: 16.5+ Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2017)

Pretty density to this young sweet wine with cooked apples, pears and spices. Medium to full body and a clean finish. Wait and see how it evolves. Rating: 91-92 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2017)

One of the most distinctive Sauternes of the vintage, the 2016 Sigalas Rabaud is powerful and almost tannic in feel, with a real punch to its flavors. The interplay of intense fruit and warm, toasty aromatics and structure is quite appealing. A hint of reduction adds nuance and freshness to the highly expressive finish. The Sigalas Rabaud is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine. This is an especially virile, potent style but there is certainly no shortage of personality or intrigue. Sigalas Rabaud is a Sauternes that demands attention, that much is obvious. Rating: 90-93 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2017)

Château Sigalas Rabaud

Sauternes Premier Cru 1855 At 14ha, Sigalas-Rabaud is the smallest of the Premier Cru Sauternes estates. It has been owned by the same family since Henri de Sigalas purchased Château Rabaud in 1863. His son, Pierre, sold off a good portion of the estate in 1903 to Adrien Promis, giving rise to the neighbouring Château Rabaud-Promis. Oddly, between 1929 and 1949, the two estates employed the same Estate Manager and they were virtually run as one, but they are today quite seperate. The vineyards are planted with 98% Semillon and just 2% Sauvignon Blanc. The influence of oak in Sigalas-Rabaud is, perhaps, a little lower than other Sauternes. Until 1990, wines were fermented in stainless-steel and aged only partially in wood. Even today, although fermented and aged in barrique, only a third of barrels are new each year.
