Very rich dark purple colour, very glossy and supple ripe black fruit, a superfine-tannined 'grown on clay' feel. Just a little drying on the finish, but quite flashy and fun. Drinking range: 2023 - 2035 Rating: 90-91 L&S (Apr 2017)

Lots of spice, old wood, earth and forest floor emerge from the 2016 Château Vieux Maillet, which is classy, medium to full-bodied, and firm on the palate. It unquestionably needs more flesh and depth, yet it is nicely balanced, has good mid-palate depth, and a clean finish. Give it a year or two and hope it fleshes out. The 2016 Vieux Maillet has a rather surly bouquet, tightly wound and missing the charm that I discerned compared to its Pomerol peers. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip in the entry, quite noticeable coconut-like notes indicating plenty of new oak that just does not quite sing from the same hymn sheet as others. This has a lush edge, with raspberry and plum sauce notes forming the core. A light brambly hint gives it spine, while a fruitcake note lingers. On the showy side, but has enough energy to keep you coming back. Rating: 89-92 James Molesworth, The Wine Spectator (Apr 2017)
