Very deep purple to black, supple feel despite a clearly high tannin charge: expressive black fruit and velvet ripe feel, backed by brightening acidity. Well done. Long too. Drinking range: 2020 - 2028 Rating: 89-91 L&S (Apr 2017)

The 2016 Villars plump, juicy Fronsac with plenty of near term appeal. The red berry flavors offer a good bit of exuberance. The 2016 Villars has a more classically-driven, perhaps backward bouquet compared to its Fronsac peers, and it required some time to open in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet, candied opening. It feels like this has undergone a little more maceration than others and feels just a tad overdone on the finish. Attractive violet edging and clear vibrancy on display. It starts elegantly as the tannins come in with quite a flourish, before softening through the mid-palate. Well balanced with lots of succulent fruit that provides a mouthwatering finish. Well judged, this has great potential for pleasurable medium term drinking.
