The 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Prestige is the only wine to include significant portions of Mourvèdre (85% Grenache and 15% Mourvèdre), partially destemmed and aged in a mix of demi-muids, barrels, and concrete tanks. It has a darker, slightly more reserved bouquet of blackberries, peppery herbs, graphite, and scorched earth. It's rich, powerful, concentrated and textured, yet also beautifully balanced and pure, with fine tannin. Give bottles a year or three, and it's going to cruise for a decade. Deep vivid red. A complex and expansive bouquet evokes ripe red fruits, exotic spices, candied flowers and garrigue, and a smoky mineral topnote provides definition. Sappy and concentrated yet light on its feet, offering intense, appealingly sweet raspberry, spicecake and lavender flavors and a touch of sassafras, which adds earthy depth. Shows outstanding clarity and red fruit thrust on the extremely long finish, which is framed by supple, slow-building tannins. Rating: 94-96 Josh Raynolds, www.vinousmedia.com (Jul 2018)

The 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Prestige is also blockbuster stuff. Made from 85% Grenache and 15% Mourvèdre, it's concentrated, ripe, full-bodied and structured, with terrific notes of black fruits, pepper, and crushed rock-like minerality. Domaine Jean Royer

Jean-Marie Royer inherited his vines in 1985 and set about improving the grape varietal mix and the vinification from then. Since more than half of the domaine is in unclassified ('Vin de Table') or 'Côtes du Rhône, he has developed a marque 'Le Petit Roy' sold as Vin de Table' for everything that does not make it into the Châteauneuf cuvées. The Petit Roy has always been a big hit in the shops ever since first joining our list.

His Châteauneufs are just gorgeous and offer refreshingly fantastic value for money. He has undoubtedly been much helped his close friend, the late star oenologist Philippe Cambié, who he went to school with and also played rugby with for many years. Cambié was more famous for a full-on rather extracted style, but Jean-Marie imposed his own, fresher, brighter style on all his wines which are crunchy and well-defined, helping cement these elegant expressions of Grenache as some of the finest from Châteauneuf.
