CORTON RENARDES

2016 Grand Cru Thibault Liger-Belair

EN PRIMEUR

Quite high up the hill of Corton, good deep soils here. 40 % Whole bunches used. There is a reat nose. Riper, juicier darker fruit - mature strawberry and some ripe raspberry too. Very expressive and fun to taste. Nice lines too - driven and some good framework to keep it steady. Balanced. Riper though but no excess. Good. L&S (Oct 2017)

The 2016 Corton-Renardes Grand Cru is reduced on the nose, although it should blow off with time to reveal the blackberry, raspberry and marine scents underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, saturated tannins and well judged acidity. Whilst it does not quite deliver the complexity I would have liked, it has a velvety sheen and a caressing finish. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. Drinking range: 2021 - 2036 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Oct 2019)

(40% vendange entier; from old vines at the top of the hill on limestone over a few meters of soil; production was 32 hectoliters per hectare, according to Liger-Belair): Bright red-ruby. Perfumed, high-pitched nose is much less forthcoming--but more ethereal--than that of the Charmes-Chambertin. Sappy, sophisticated wine with a savory, slightly high-toned quality and perfectly integrated acidity to give it lift and clarity. The tannins are fine-grained, allowing the finish to mount slowly and coat the mouth. Lovely calcaire energy here. Rating: 91-93 Stephen Tanzer, www.vinousmedia.com (Mar 2018)

(40% whole cluster). An intensely earthy and sauvage-infused nose is composed by notes of dark raspberry, violet and a hint of spice. There is once again fine volume, energy and intensity to the broad-shouldered flavors that possess excellent minerality that really comes up on the relatively refined, balanced and austere finale. This is also sufficiently firm that at least some forbearance will be required. Drinking range: 2028 - Rating: 91-93 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2018)

Raspberry fruit..an open, expressive aroma. Sunny aroma...and yet by contrast, the palate is reserved. Vital and intense; purposeful. Streamlined and pure. I like this - discreet, focused and pure. A very good wine indeed. A lovely long finish. Complex. Top notch Corton. Drinking range: 2023 - Rating: 19.5 Sarah Marsh MW, The Burgundy Briefing (Nov 2017)

The lack of the word 'domaine' in the name signals that this is a négociant wine from Thibault Liger-Belair. On the whole Thibault buys grapes having tended the vines with his own team, so that the wines are domaine wines in all but name.
