GEVREY CHAMBERTIN

2016 Coeur de Roy Domaine Bernard Dugat-Py

EN PRIMEUR

(from vines of 50 to 100+ years of age situated in Epointures, Combe du Dessus, Jouise, and Les Marchais; vinified with 50% of the stems). An exotically spicy nose features notes of tangerine peel, cassis, violet and earth. I very much like the texture of the dense and relatively refined medium weight plus flavors that brim with both minerality and dry extract while offering superb finishing depth on the beautifully lengthy finish that is a bit less youthfully austere than usual. While this powerful effort is firmly structured there is enough buffering sap such that this could be enjoyed young if that’s your preference. Drinking range: 2028 - Rating: 91 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2019)

Very lifted and concentrated. Luscious fruit and very immediate even if there is considerable structure underneath. Big and bold but a bit more freshness than of old. Drinking range: 2023 - 2030 Rating: 17 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Feb 2018)

(these vines range in age from 50 to 105 years, according to Dugat; made with 60% whole clusters and aged in 50% new oak): Initially reticent aromas of boysenberry, violet, licorice and espresso show subtle complexity and a stronger torrefaction quality with aeration. Plush in texture but less expressive and harmonious today than the Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes. The purple fruit and licorice flavors are nicely lifted by herbal and spicy nuances from the stems, which contribute elegance and lift. Very easily digestible and not at all hard, but the building tannins will nonetheless require some patience. (Incidentally, Dugat was not ready to present his Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles Vieilles Vignes, as the wine finished its malo very late and had just been racked.) Rating: 90-92 Stephen Tanzer, www.vinousmedia.com (Jan 2018)

(from vines of 50 to 100+ years of age situated in Epointures, Combe du Dessus, Jouise, and Les Marchais; vinified with 50% of the stems). Firm reduction. On the plus side I really like the texture of the dense and relatively refined medium weight plus flavors that also brim with both minerality and dry extract while offering superb finishing depth on the beautifully lengthy finish that is a bit less youthfully austere than usual. While this is also firmly structured there is enough buffering sap such that this could be enjoyed young if that’s your preference. Drinking range: 2028 - Rating: 90-92 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2018)

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin "Cuvée Coeur de Roy" comes from vines that are 50+ years old, matured in two-thirds new oak with 50% whole-cluster fruit. Now this has a generous and expressive bouquet with billowing scents of black cherry, raspberry, cassis and sous-bois, very well defined and soaking that new oak up so that you barely notice its guiding presence. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, a crisp line of acidity lending tautness and linearity, precise and detailed toward the finish. This is one of the best Coeur du Roy cuvées that I have tasted from barrel. Drinking range: 2022 - 2036 Rating: 91-93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2017)

The Coeur de Roy cuvée, which derives from vines between 60 and 150 years of age, is absolutely superb in 2016, bursting from the glass with notes of cassis, crisp wild berry fruit, cherry and truffle, framed by a touch of new oak. The wine is full-bodied and rich, almost gourmand, with lovely depth, succulent acids and near-painful levels of concentration. This was vinified with 50% whole cluster fruit and really transcends one’s expectations of a village wine. Drinking range: 2026 - 2045 Rating: 93 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Oct 2017)

Domaine Dugat-Py, along with only DRC, Roumier, Rousseau and Leroy, is rated in the top Three Star category by the 'Classement' published by the Revue du Vin de France. These are the essence of robust Burgundy, wines of huge scale and concentration. Patience is required, so lay down a few grand bottles for your dotage.
