KUMEU RIVER

2016 Chardonnay Coddington

Grapes Chardonnay
Colour White
Origin New Zealand, North Island
ABV 13%
Vineyard Coddington

The 2016 Coddington Chardonnay has an elegant white flower and lemon peel bouquet, perhaps slightly less mineral-driven than the 2017. The palate is taut and linear, displaying a little more bitter lemon than the 2017 but showing outstanding tension and mineralité toward the long finish. This has so much verve and class. Drinking range: 2021 - 2040 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2019)

One of four excellent Kumeu River Chardonnay’s at Lea & Sandeman, this Kiwi dry white from Coddington Vineyard is fresh, intensely aromatic, showing white Burgundy-like leesy notes on the nose, followed by a long, textured, richly creamy, full-flavoured peachy fruit quality, all beautifully balanced and dry on the finish. Rating: 92 The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com (Jan 2019)

Similar smoky nose to the Kumeu Estate but an edge of baked creamy oats porridge here. Much more stony on the palate: peaches carved in pebbles. Smart, sophisticated, intense, tight as harp strings. Long and fabulous. I’d gladly pay the extra £5 – this is such a big step up. Drinking range: 2020 - 2028 Rating: 17.5 Tamlyn Currin - www.JancisRobinson.com (May 2018)

The same producer also makes several cuvées, from different vineyards, as well as a cheaper “estate” blend. I love the white and green peach and satisfying creaminess, of this one, which comes with just a gentle skein of struck match running through it.Victoria Moore, The Daily Telegraph (Apr 2018)

Kumeu River

From the pioneering days to the establishment of the New Zealand wine industry to today, the Brajkovich family have been internationally recognised as producing world class wine. The Brajkovich family continue to harvest their grapes at Kumeu and refine their wine making skills.

The Brajkovichs are nationally recognised as a founding family of the New Zealand wine industry, and the current generation are internationally recognised as producing world class Chardonnay.

Just as the Brajkovich family has grown, so too has the winery itself. Extensions and additions mark the milestones that have seen business adapt and expand over the years. Today, the winery produces around 250,000 bottles annually from 30 hectares of its own vineyards in Kumeu, and another 10 hectares from local growers.
