KUMEU 'VILLAGE'

2016 Chardonnay Kumeu River

Grapes Chardonnay
Colour White
Origin New Zealand, North Island
ABV 13.5%

Fermented 25% in old French oak barriques, and 75% in stainless steel tanks. Hand harvested. Very grown-up Chardonnay from these maestros on the North Island of New Zealand. 'Old school' up to a point but with such bright lines and perfect weight, this is so much more than a Burgundy impersonator. A great wine in its own right, full of character and a bargain to boot. As ever this is a brilliant introduction to the superb Kumeu River range. L&S (Jul 2017)

A suburb of Auckland is the place to go for those seeking bargain alternatives to white burgundy, even if the Brajkovich family can no longer afford the land prices there for vineyard expansion and are extending into Hawke's Bay on the east coast. Their single-vineyard bottlings are even more concentrated and ageworthy. Drinking range: 2017 - 2020Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Dec 2017)

With an inclusion of 25% Hawke's Bay fruit this wine offers rich tropical fruit aromas of melons, pomegranates and fragrant ripe peaches. Extremely fruit-forward. The palate has a pulpy fruit texture. Evenly paced acid drive. Drinking very well now. Rating: 90 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Nov 2017)

Light nose with some matchstick creeping in. Awfully good value really! GV Drinking range: 2017 - 2020 Rating: 16.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Oct 2017)

Kumeu River

From the pioneering days to the establishment of the New Zealand wine industry to today, the Brajkovich family have been internationally recognised as producing world class wine. The Brajkovich family continue to harvest their grapes at Kumeu and refine their wine making skills.

The Brajkovichs are nationally recognised as a founding family of the New Zealand wine industry, and the current generation are internationally recognised as producing world class Chardonnay.

Just as the Brajkovich family has grown, so too has the winery itself. Extensions and additions mark the milestones that have seen business adapt and expand over the years. Today, the winery produces around 250,000 bottles annually from 30 hectares of its own vineyards in Kumeu, and another 10 hectares from local growers.
