MAZOYÈRES CHAMBERTIN

2016 Grand Cru Domaine Bernard Dugat-Py

EN PRIMEUR

Right next door to charm, but the terroir is completely different. Many more stones here in the soil, more limestone. Loic used between 80% and 90% whole bunches here. This has darker, more toasty notes, but the fruit is denser too. Darker, yet riper somehow. Real power and ample breadth, but not a slug - there are great lines here. More polished feel to the middle core. Round and slick, but a tad more minerality, more heft, more wallop. Finish is on the stone, more restrained and compact, neatly framed again by lovely dusty, chalky grip. L&S (Nov 2017)

Firm, concentrated, pungent nose and then gloriously round fruit just about disguises the tannin until the very end. Pretty ambitious and glamorous. Glossy and rich with a dry finish, and long. Drinking range: 2025 - 2040 Rating: 18 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Feb 2018)

My own highlights include the Mazis- and Mazoyères-Chambertin and a quite brilliant Gevrey Lavaux Saint-Jacques. Unlike the Charmes-Chambertin, the 2016 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru was a normal crop since it was unaffected by frost. This vintage includes 80 to 90% whole-cluster fruit. It has a majestic bouquet with bold black cherry and blueberry fruit, superb delineation and it conveys an almost infectious sense of energy. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin but there is that arching, cathedral-like structure one looks for in a Mazoyères. It gently grips the mouth, a little chalkiness coming though on the sorbet-fresh finish. Outstanding. Drinking range: 2026 - 2050 Rating: 95-97 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2017)

(vinified with 75% whole clusters; no frost here): Wild, musky scents of black raspberry and roasted coffee, lifted by licorice and spice notes. Wonderfully silky on entry, then turns tighter in the middle palate, showing limited pliancy to its dark fruit and licorice pastille flavors. This very backward wine accurately conveys the rocky, thin soil of the site. A distinctly masculine grand cru with a powerful tannic spine and an impression of sound acidity. This wine may need a decade in the cellar to harmonize. Rating: 92-95 Stephen Tanzer, www.vinousmedia.com (Jan 2018)

(from a .25 ha parcel and vinified with ~80% stems). Moderately heavy reduction. The rich, intense and overtly muscular imposingly-scaled flavors also possess excellent mid-palate concentration with plenty of dry extract that serves to buffer the notably prominent tannic spine on the equally serious, long and explosive finish. This is not an elegant wine but it is very clearly built-to-age. *Don't miss*. Drinking range: 2036 - Rating: 93-96 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2018)

Domaine Dugat-Py, along with only DRC, Roumier, Rousseau and Leroy, is rated in the top Three Star category by the 'Classement' published by the Revue du Vin de France. These are the essence of robust Burgundy, wines of huge scale and concentration. Patience is required, so lay down a few grand bottles for your dotage.
