MAZOYÈRES CHAMBERTIN

2016 Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru Domaine Christophe Perrot-Minot

EN PRIMEUR

Intense fruit hit opens up this with a loud noise. Great weight of riper red berries, ripe raspberry and some delicious strawberry too. More burly, more breadth, yet again this is very straight, with good focus. Not weighty or heavy. Just pure and powerful with beautifully ripened fruit and incredibly fine, delicate tannins. Long finish of beautiful, gourmand fruit.L&S (Oct 2017)

The 2016 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru is showing some stem addition on the nose, and it works well: complex and very terroir-driven with endearing sous-bois aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, good acidity, classic in style with hints of tobacco and white pepper towards the fresh and persistent finish. Excellent. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. Drinking range: 2022 - 2048 Rating: 93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Oct 2019)

Cask sample. Lifted, aromatic nose with eucalypt, stemmy herbal aromas and well-defined red fruit. Long and intense on the palate – great substance and intensity. Long, impressive finish with a saline mineral quality. Drinking range: 2024 - 2044 Rating: 18 Richard Hemming MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Feb 2018)

Dark, bright, saturated red. Sexy resiny spices and a hint of orange zest lift the wine's youthfully unforthcoming dark fruit aromas. Subtly complex but a bit unforthcoming, with its sweet, rich dark berry and spice flavors cut by savory minerality. A distinctly deeper style than the Charmes-Chambertin, showing more earth, spice and iron-like rare steak notes and finishing with greater grip. The Charmes is ethereal by comparison to this big boy, which finishes with a serious tannic structure and salty minerality. Rating: 93-95 Stephen Tanzer, www.vinousmedia.com (Jan 2018)

A more deeply pitched and brooding nose offers up notes earth, underbrush, plum, cassis and plenty of sauvage influence. There is terrific punch to the very rich, intense and muscular big-bodied flavors that possess a velvety and caressing mid-palate mouthfeel that contrasts considerably with the robust, powerful and moderately austere finish that delivers spectacular length. I really like the sense of definition and harmony here but note well that unlike the Chapelle, this is going to require the better part of a decade to become sufficiently civilized to be enjoyable. Drinking range: 2033 - Rating: 93-95 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2018)

The 2016 Mazoyères-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru clearly is the most intense of Christophe's 2016s on the nose with ebullient scents of black cherries, bilberry, slightly overripe Satsumas and rose petal aromas. It takes a while to get going, but it is worth persisting with. The palate is very harmonious with supple tannin, a silver bead of acidity that winds its way through the layers of pure red fruit and it fans out with a glorious mineral-rich, lightly spiced finish. The mouth is tingling afterward for 30 to 45 seconds. Superb—this is a strong follow-up to the 2015 and may even surpass it. Drinking range: 2021 - 2045 Rating: 95-97 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2017)

Deep and darker cherry fruits aroma. Black pepper, earthier and minty. Rich and dense on the strike and a more masculine profile. Ripe tannins with bite and density. Taste of iron on the finish Powerful finish. It’s a very good Mazoyères. Drinking range: 2024 - Rating: 19.7 Sarah Marsh MW, The Burgundy Briefing (Nov 2017)

Christophe Perrot-Minot is now the fourth generation of his family producing wine on the estate after his great grandfather Amédée Merme devoted himself to the management and production of wine over 130 years ago. The estate has gone from strength to strength – always keeping the highest standards. Integrated viticulture has been practiced for many years now which has been adapted especially for the terroir. No herbicide or chemical fertilizer is used, instead, Christophe prefers to “stand back and listen to this terroir, only intervening when necessary or when the weather requires it, never systematically.” This is one of the star domaines of the whole of Burgundy.
