MERCUREY

2016 1er Cru Les Veleys Domaine François Raquillet

EN PRIMEUR

Nice and intense. 'Plus vertical que l'horizontal' says Francois. This is smart. Stony, mineral grippiness and an enticing fresh middle, nice amount of pretty fruit too - red and soft black flesh. But that dusty stony clean scrub is great. harvested at a low 28 HL/HA. L&S (Dec 2017)

This too possess ample wood that also stops just short of overshadowing the cool, pure and even more complex nose that flashes notes of ripe and fresh aromas of various dark berries, plum, violet and spiced tea. The gorgeous textured, sleek and utterly delicious medium weight flavors are once again shaped by relatively fine grained tannins on the sneaky long and impeccably well-balanced finale. Excellent and built-to-age. 2024+ Rating: 92 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Oct 2018)

The 2016 Mercurey 1er Cru Les Veleys is also exceptional, unfurling in the glass with aromas of cherries, cassis, coniferous forest floor and dried flowers. On the palate, it's supple, medium to full-bodied and succulent, with a deep core of fruit concealing fine-grained but firm, stony tannins. This should prove to be long lived. Drinking range: 2021 - 2035 Rating: 93 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jul 2018)

Cask sample. Less overtly fruity than their Vasées. Finely ground tannic fur on the palate, and the flavour range is quite compact too – yet with sufficient concentration to promise future complexity. Drinking range: 2021 - 2031 Rating: 16.5+ Richard Hemming MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Feb 2018)

2016 Mercurey, 1er Cru Les Veleys, Domaine François Raquillet brings more structure and gaminess to the party and it also ups the depth of fruit and length of finish considerably, too. This is every inch a bargain at this price. Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (Jan 2018)

François took over the running of this estate from his father, Jean, in 1990, with his wife Emmanuelle. Records show that the same family have made wine in Mercurey since the 1600s, and Francois is the eleventh generation.

With eleven hectares under vine, François has substantially reduced yields, introduced higher quality oak barrels (up to 50% new wood for the Premiers Crus) and significantly increased the quality of wines made at this domaine. François explains he tries to avoid over-extraction at all costs - his one aim is to deliver the beautifully pure fruit profile he gets out of the old vines - this he does with great success. It is a wonderfully transparent style - combined with good mid-palate weight.
