NUITS SAINT GEORGES

2016 Charmotte Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair

EN PRIMEUR

Good bounce here. Good power to the black fleshed fruit. A tad firmer, a savoury, meaty whiff and some minerality there too which really drives it on. Affected by frost and mildew - just 6 barrels this year from 1 HA, a very poor yield. But what there is, is good! More bold than the Chambolle, but still pretty fruit. Not too in your face. Nicely showy and complex. Good. L&S (Oct 2017)

(40% whole cluster). The restrained nose is ultra-fresh with a cool mix of red and dark currant, plum, lavender and newly turned earth. There is terrific intensity to the energetic, indeed racy, medium-bodied flavors that possess a lovely texture thanks to the fine mid-palate density, all wrapped in a robust and lightly mineral-inflected finale. This is an excellent Nuits villages and worth checking out. Drinking range: 2024 - Rating: 90 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2019)

Fruit almost trumps oak in this wine. Rather refined fruit though the oak is still in evidence. Big and burly and sweet with a suggestion of gypsy-cream biscuits! Drinking range: 2024 - 2036 Rating: 16.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Feb 2018)

(a little seen villages that is situated on the Vosne side just beneath the 1er Bousselots; 40% whole cluster). Here too the expressive nose is ultra-fresh with a cool mix of red and dark currant, lavender and newly turned earth. There is terrific intensity to the energetic, indeed racy, medium-bodied flavors that possess a lovely texture thanks to the fine mid-palate density, all wrapped in a robust and lightly mineral-inflected finale. Drinking range: 2023 - Rating: 88-90 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2018)

(40% vendange entier; 50% new oak; just six barrels were produced from one hectare of vines exposed to the combe influence): Bright, dark red. Dark cherry, dark berries and a hint of flowers on the nose. Sappy dark fruit flavors convey an impression of solidity, with an element of warm spices and smoky limestone extending the finish and supporting the wine's serious dusting of tannins. Liger-Belair feels that owing to low yields, many Nuits-Saint-Georges '16s from vineyards on the north side of the town are more burly and masculine than usual. Rating: 89-91 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jan 2018)

North side under Bousselots. 40-50cm red and brown clay and then degraded limestone. Last vineyard situated on the fault. 30% whole bunch. Black fruit and black pepper. The tannins are fine grained and very silky for NGS. It has a graphite, smoky mineral note (not reduction). Tinderbox. This is part of the freshness too. Savoury earthiness. It’s a good, layered interesting, lively and savoury village wine. Rating: 16.35 Sarah Marsh MW, The Burgundy Briefing (Nov 2017)

Thibault Liger-Belair has two hectares in Les Saint Georges, the vineyard which gives Nuits the rest of its name, and 60 ares out of a total of 4 hectares of the Grand Cru Richebourg, as well as a good holding in the Clos Vougeot and some well-placed village wines. The vineyards are a good start, but it is Thibault himself who has catapulted this domaine straight into the very top echelons of Côte de Nuits domaines from his first vintage (2002). Thibault was trained as an oenologist but first worked as a wine buyer. He has come to wine making with a wide experience of wine buying, and has had the advantage of having discussed wine-making for many years, with the benefit of his oenological background, with some of the best winemakers of the world. Viticulture is biodynamic (since 2005), yields low but not ludicrously low, everything is pragmatic, so that he should be doing just what is necessary and no more. He uses 40-50% new wood maximum. The wines are bright, pure, focused, aromatic and elegant without lacking anything in the way of stuffing.
