PÁRAMOS DE NICASIA ROSÉ

2016 Clarete Màquina y Tabla

Grapes Tinta del Pais, Malvasia, Garnacha
Colour Rosé
Origin Spain, Toro
ABV 13.5%

This is Susana and Oriol's first ever 'pink' - and its an absolute humdinger. The nose is delicate, with white fruit flowers, some lovely delicate red berry fruit and aromatic herbs. In the mouth the feel is limpid beautifully fluid and juicy, smooth and serene, with a fresh and long finish. Thrilling stuff. This is a blend of 33% Tinta del País 33% Garnacha 33% Malvasía - in a mixed single vineyard where the vines are all about 50 years old. The blend is put together in a very old, and very large (3000 Litre) cask where it stays for 6 months before bottling. As with all their wines this is fully 'Bio-dynamic.' L&S (Jun 2017)

Produced with a blend of 35% Garnacha, 35% Malvasía and 30% Tinta de Toro, the 2016 Páramos de Nicasia Clarete is a "clarete" rather than a rosé. It's a mixture of white and red grapes from old vines whose full clusters were pressed and the juice put to ferment in 225-liter oak barrels. It matured in fourth use oak barrels for eight months. It has a serious profile, especially on the palate, where it's somewhere in between a light red and a full-bodied white, with serious chalky tannins and consistency to stand up to food and a few years of aging in bottle. It's tasty and supple, serious and not banal. 5,680 bottles were filled in June 2017. Drinking range: 2018 - 2021 Rating: 91 Luis Gutierrez, www.robertparker.com (Aug 2018)

Named after Nicasia who owns the vines, this is a star from a DO better known for its big, hot reds. A revival of the pale red clarete style, made with Garnacha, Tinta de Toro and 30% Malvasia – hence the lifted fruit and firm structure. Nothing jammy here. Drinking range: 2018 - 2019 Rating: 91 Decanter Magazine (Aug 2018)

Bravely bottled in green glass – a rosé producer more bothered with protecting the wine in the bottle than showing off the colour. Medium orange pink. Very interesting nose – nuts and orange peel and spice and intense wild strawberries. Utterly gorgeous! So spicy – it fills the mouth and reverberates and you get tiny pink peppercorns and berries and crunch and a little bit of fudge and bite and burn. Stunning. Hazelnuts. I would just love this with a plate of jamón ibérico and warm, crusty bread and a big bowl of green nutty olive oil to dip it into. Yum. Simply yum. Drinking range: 2018 - 2020 Rating: 17 Tamlyn Currin - www.JancisRobinson.com (May 2018)

Màquina y Tabla

It was an exciting day when we first discovered these brilliant wines, and we are delighted to be introducing them to the UK and share the joy - each wine has an incredible sense of identity and real pow! Yet all done with such charm and restrained style, they just make you smile. Pure, elegant, expressive and so, so drinkable - this is exciting stuff. They look absolutely beautiful too - could this be the perfect package from Spain!?

'Màquina & Tabla' is the brainchild of a dynamic duo - Oriol the winemaker and Susana, who is the creative genius behind the marketing and presentation. They are a tiny family business that began in 2013 in Castilla y León. Their focus is in the details, and they believe in a high quality wine that is always respectful of the land and nature. Their project started from scratch, travelling around the region looking for the oldest and most peculiar vineyards. All their grapes are cultivated bio-dynamically, grown currently in rented vineyards.

Oriol the winemaker describes himself as having been an "oenopath" who, slowly but surely, became more and more interested in winemaking, a passion that turned into a profession during the 2000 harvest in Clos Mogador. Since then as a winemaker he has lead, or taken part in, several projects, including with Vinya l'Hereu, Heretat Montrubí, Els Jelipins and Prieto Pariente. Now, with this project he says he is 'happier than a kid in a candy shop'. Susana comes from the world of arts and entertainment, having been a Creative Editor in publishing, audiovisual and new media for Prisa, Planeta and RBA, while conceptualizing new ideas, she has managed teams and projects, as well as coordinated communication and production for small projects related to art and music. Now she's bringing all of her experience and energy to Màquina & Tabla. The striking label designs by Joan Josep Bertran perhaps need a tiny bit of explanation, and you can read more about them on their website (link at the top of this page).
