SAINT AUBIN

2016 Princée Domaine Hubert Lamy

EN PRIMEUR

Great feel. Some good intensity to the fruit but no fatness. Nicely fresh. Good drive and gentle grip of minerality. Citrus again, but there is some riper flesh in the middle. The limestone-heavy vineyard makes itself known here on the focused tighter finish. Good stuff.L&S (Nov 2017)

A cool, pure and restrained nose grudgingly offers up notes of citrus, pear and soft floral scents. The highly energetic flavors are also quite precise and chiseled on the equally bone dry finale. Drinking range: 2021 - Rating: 87-89 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jun 2018)

Almost painful, this is so high in acidity! Wait and wait and wait for this – but he does have a fine track record… Drinking range: 2023 - 2032 Rating: 16++ Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Feb 2018)

The 2016 Saint-Aubin La Princée comes from ten different parcels, each affected by frost to different degrees according to Olivier Lamy. It has a fresh lime and Granny Smith apple scented bouquet. The palate is fresh with bitter lemon, great tension, not shrill but certainly sharp with a precise saline finish. Angular at the moment, give this 12 months in bottle, then drink over the next 3 or 4 years. Drinking range: 2019 - 2023 Rating: 85-87 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2017)

This has a lightly cool grip in the middle. There is a bit of tannic bite. Quite savoury fruit. It is lightly compact. More savoury mineral character maybe too, but also more angular at the moment. Rating: 14.5 Sarah Marsh MW, The Burgundy Briefing (Nov 2017)

(an assemblage of ten parcels that yielded around 50 hectoliters per hectare as Lamy's village vines in Saint-Aubin were not affected by frost): Aromas of lemon and lime with a touch of reduction. Juicy, penetrating and nicely delineated, with a strong lemon drop flavor buttressed by sappy minerality and complicated by a whiff of chlorophyll. Not a particularly fleshy wine but finishes with lovely length and grip. From very minerally terroirs, notes Lamy. Rating: 88-90 Stephen Tanzer, www.vinousmedia.com (Sept 2017)

Olivier Lamy has built on the solid foundations his father Hubert prepared with twenty years and more of work in the vineyards. Today the Domaine has 18.5 hectares of vines - 80% are Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir. The vines are in several appellations - Saint-Aubin, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet and Santenay, as well as the excellent Bourgogne Blanc. The reputation of the domaine is now made, but the Saint Aubins, both red and white, remain some of the bargains of Côte d'Or, and challenge the supposed superiority of the grander village names on a regular basis, both in terms of young and mature wines.

Olivier's wine-making style and preference is to emphasise the fresh and the mineral side of his wines, and there is very little new wood in this cellar, with many wines with no new wood at all, and that is with the wines in 600 litre demi-muids rather that the classic Burgundy (225 litre) fût. Certainly Oliver's whites do have an arrow-like purity and intensity, and seem to age completely straight and true.

The reds are worth more than a casual mention too. Olivier has been getting some consultation help from Sylvain Pataille, and the wines have energy and bounce along with the supple tannins and ripeness.
