From Sauvignon Blanc vines that are more than 50 years of age, planted in flint soil “Silex”. They are cultivated following traditional, sustainable methods so as to maximise respect for the ecosystem and the environment. These soils encourage a slower maturation of the grapes, which allows a later harvest and an improved resistance to disease. This soil produces a wine with remarkable potential for ageing. After the grapes reach their peak maturity in October, they are picked by hand and then sorted into boxes. The grapes are put in whole bunches into the pneumatic press, where the pressing is done in a gentle and slow manner in order to obtain a clear juice of the highest quality. This juice is then put in to barrels of 2000 litres. It remains between 8 and 12 months, during which it will undergo fermentation and a period of resting on lees. Tasting Notes: Pale gold in colour, the Silex Blanc is an elegant embodiment of sauvignon blanc characteristic of the Sancerre region, with a nose of little white flowers. In the mouth it is silky, round and delicate, with a pleasing richness and complexity on the back palate. It has a good balance between alcohol and acidity levels in the mouth, marked with mellow notes of wood, acacia, well-ripened exotic fruits, with minerals in the background.Winemaker's notes (Feb 2018)

Domaine Vincent Delaporte

Patrick and I first visited Vincent Delaporte in 1986, a memorable end to a long day, we finished by tasting older and older red and white Sancerres. His wines were in Steven Spurrier's selection for the Caves de la Madeleine, where I had worked several years earlier, and the London end of which Patrick was running at the time. They have featured in the Lea & Sandeman selection since our very first list. The domaine passed to Vincent's son Jean-Yves and his wife Nathalie, and now their son Matthieu is in charge, after a 'stage' at L&S in the summer of 2012, and taken over the winemaking role. They have recently incorporated the vines of Matthieu's uncle, giving them two new jewels in the crown, decent holdings in the Monts Damnés (white) and Cul de Beaujeu (red).

Matthieu has taken the domaine in the direction of organic farming, although he still hesitates over going for certification. He has stopped buying new barrels, and stopped using cultured yeasts, sometimes allowing malolactic fermentation to occur. Levels of sulphur are kept to the barest minimum.
