VACQUEYRAS

2016 Domaine la Bouïssière

Grapes Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre
Colour Red
Origin France, Rhône
District Southern Rhône
Village Vacqueyras
ABV 13.5%

50% Grenache, 42% Syrah, 8% Mourvèdre. Élevage in a combination of barrel, steel and concrete egg. Nice and fresh. Properly rich, but with a lift that must be coming from the high proportion of whole bunches as well as from the elevation of the vineyard and the Syrah content. There's a lively freshness. Thierry describes how he works with infusion rather than extraction - they've lifted the pedal over the last 4-5 vintages in a bid to make this less rustic. The amount of Syrah brings a 'cooler' influence to temper the very sunny character of this vineyard. Silky supple, it has easily enough extract, but remains fresh and precise in its floral and black fruit flavours, with lovely length. Drinking range: 2019 - 2028 L&S (Jan 2018)

(raised in 65% oak foudres and demi-muids , all neutral, and 35% concrete tanks) Limpid violet. Suave, highly perfumed scents of red berry liqueur, anise and smoky minerals carry a lively floral overtone. Appealingly sweet black raspberry and lavender pastille flavors are sharpened by an exotic touch of blood orange. The berry and floral notes repeat strongly on a very long, silky finish that's given shape by smoothly interwoven tannins. Drinking range: 2022 - 2028 Rating: 92 Josh Raynolds, www.vinousmedia.com (Nov 2018)

Brought up in a mix of tank and used barrels, the 2016 Vacqueyras Tradition (48% Grenache, 36% Syrah, and the rest Mourvèdre) has a classic vibe in its red and black fruits, seaweed, garrigue, and Asian spice-laced aromas and flavors. It’s balanced, has terrific fruit, good acidity, and stays light and weightless on the palate. It’s well worth a case purchase and will keep through 2026. Rating: 92 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Sept 2018)

48% Grenache, 36% Syrah, 16% Mourvèdre. Smoked meat on the nose, cherry jam and blackcurrant – attractive breadth of flavour. Fine tannin, smooth texture, medium body, ripe finish. Has the classic, generous succulence of 2016 in abundance. Drinking range: 2017 - 2024 Rating: 16.5 Richard Hemming MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Nov 2017)

Domaine la Bouïssière

Thierry and Gilles Faravel's Domaine la Bouïssière in Gigondas is exceptional in many ways, apart from the personality of Thierry himself, it is the site of the vineyard, high up under the 'Dentelles de Montmirail' which makes the defining difference.

In contrast to the vines being baked on the plains of stones at the foot of the hill, the Bouïssière vines benefit from cooling air at night falling from the high peaks, and the wines retain a freshness and subtle persistence which is very different to the sometimes bludgeoning broadness and alcoholic heat of the wines on the plain.

Gilles and Thierry Faravel employ non-interventionalist practices to make wines as naturally as possible, resulting in wines of immense concentration and depth, with true vibrancy and the capacity to age for ten to fifteen years.
