VOSNE ROMANÉE

2016 Barreaux Domaine Anne Gros

EN PRIMEUR

Pretty feel. Lovely ripe fruit. So feminine and sleek though. Great acidity - lovely ripeness. Clever balance and then a lick of darker, grippier matter. Perfectly spherical tannins add shape but no hard lines at this stage even though this year due to the size of the harvest they have changed the wood aging regime somewhat. Of the four barrels in total, two barrels are new two barrels are old - so 50% new wood. Normally about 30-35% new. This is a village wine 'plus plus'. Seriously good. L&S (Oct 2017)

North-facing with thin topsoil on limestone. Tank sample. Deep crimson. Quite a bit of substance and life. Real grip and quite marked freshness. Pretty tight on the end, after some mouth-filling bitter-cherry fruit. Needs time. Not the open charm of many 2016s. But it may outlast them! Drinking range: 2023 - 2032Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Feb 2018)

There is just enough wood lurking in the background of the black cherry, plum and Asian-style tea-inflected aromas to mention. The sleek, delicious and beautifully well-detailed medium-bodied flavors possess a polished mouthfeel, all wrapped in a saline finish where a touch of youthful austere arises. This too is better than average for its level and should make for a fine age-worthy Vosne villages. Drinking range: 2023 - Rating: 89-91 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2018)

The 2016 Vosne Romanee les Barreaux has quite a compact bouquet with scents of blackberry, bilberry and a touch of sous bois, a little introspective at the moment but pure. The palate is dense with thickset tannin, ripe and quite robust, maybe just requiring a little more finesse and Pinoté to come through on the finish. Give this a couple of years in bottle. Drinking range: 2020 - 2028 Rating: 88-90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Dec 2017)

Lovely intensity. Red fruits and a certain piquancy. High toned and sweet. Satin tannins, morello cherry fruit, juicy and a delicacy and floral notes. Energetic.Sarah Marsh MW, The Burgundy Briefing (Nov 2017)

Anne Gros joined her father François at the family domaine in Vosne Romanée in 1988, having given up her arts studies in favour of viticulture and oenology at Beaune and Dijon, and has run the domaine alone since 1995. The Domaine now has 6.5 hectares of Pinot and Chardonnay. Anne describes herself as being 'wary of certainties and keen to preserve her freedom'.

In the vineyards Anne practises viticulture influenced by organic and biodynamic principles, and the vineyards are ploughed and fertilised with compost, but although she believes that the long-term health of the vineyards are best preserved by such methods, she likes to maintain the freedom to use conventional treatments when necessary.

In the cellar, the wines are classically made, in cement tanks for the reds, and stainless steel for the whites. They are then are aged in barrel for up to fifteen months, with 80% new wood for the grand crus, 50% for the village wines and 30% for the regional wines. Anne is quietly meticulous and almost obsessive about cleanliness in her cellar, which perhaps is reflected in the delicacy and restrained tension in her wines, which have aromatic clarity, limpid precision, sheer joie de vivre, lively balance and persistence.
