CARILLON D'ANGÉLUS

2017 Saint Emilion

Grapes Cab Franc, Merlot
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Saint Emilion & Satellites
Village Saint Emilion

90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc. 1/3rd new oak. 15% of production lost to frost. The team at Angelus are happy with the quality of the second wine this year. I would agree with them. Lovely fragrant nose. The mouth feel is impressive. the weight is checked by ripe grippy tannins. Well defined flavours of coffee and sweet oak marry well with the precise dark fruit. Plenty of energy and drive. Long finish. Rating: 91 L&S (Apr 2018)

The 2017 Le Carillon d’Angelus offers pretty blackberry and blueberry scents, well defined with just a light touch of violet petals. The palate is medium-bodied with edgy tannin on the entry, quite fresh with a crisp line of acidity. Nicely structured for a deuxième vin, it just misses the length of a more benevolent growing season. I can certainly see this being approachable after a couple of years. Drinking range: 2020 - 2026 Rating: 87-89 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2018)

Composed of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the 2017 Le Carillon d'Angélus is very deep purple-black in color and features a lovely core of crushed black cherries, blackberries and blueberries with touches of violets and cedar chest plus a waft of cinnamon stick. The palate is medium-bodied, elegant and fresh with soft tannins and plenty of juicy fruit, finishing on a peppery note. Readers should bear in mind that Le Carillon d'Angélus is not a second label per se, but another label with grapes coming from other terroirs in Saint-Émilion. It can be cellared, but the aim is to make it approachable when young. Rating: 88-90 Lisa Perrotti-Brown, RobertParker.com (Apr 2018)

The second wine of the estate is the 2017 Angélus Le Carillon d'Angélus, which is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc in 2017. This surprisingly deep, medium to full-bodied, rich second wine has rocking notes of blue fruits, violets, spring flowers and a hint of minerality. It’s a seriously good second wine in a vintage that was hard on second wines. Rating: 91-93 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Apr 2018)
