CHAMBERTIN CLOS DE BÈZE

2017 Grand Cru Domaine Faiveley

EN PRIMEUR

After tasting the Mazis the immediate feel here is softer, but there is some leather and more restraint to the fruit. This is bright and has good powdered energy. a chalky drive keeps it so fresh - but there is a racy sleekness to the red and purple fruit. Good and intense. Smart stuff indeed. Drinking range: 2020 - 2029L&S (Nov 2018)

Clear fresh purple with a lighter rim, very perfumed, plenty of charm here. Some whole bunches showing in an elegant style, leavening the ripe fruit. Impressive intensity in linear style, this will develop very nicely, and begins to do so with time in the glass. Does it have quite the punch in the middle and at the end for a really high score? Tasted: September 2021 Rating: 95 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Sept 2021)

(from a 1.29 ha parcel). An exuberantly spicy and attractively fresh nose offers up notes of red currant, essence of plum and ample floral influences, all of which is surrounded by much more subtle wood influence. The refined and pure middle weight flavors possess excellent delineation and verve while delivering very fine complexity and persistence on the youthfully austere finish. Like many of the wines in the range, this is not especially dense but it is beautifully harmonious and well-balanced plus the dense but fine tannins should assure a long life. Drinking range: 2035 - Rating: 93-95 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2019)

The 2017 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru comes from two parcels. It has a charming bouquet of ebullient raspberry and wild strawberry aromas; hints of vanilla pod and rose petal lend complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, gentle grip and a saline, oyster-shell-tinged finish that lingers in the mouth. This is one of Faiveley’s most impressive offerings in 2017. Superb. Drinking range: 2022 - 2048 Rating: 94-96 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2019)

This has gorgeous fruit. It is fully succulent, has volume, density and is so very aromatic. The finish is very long and floral. Rating: 19.45 Sarah Marsh MW, The Burgundy Briefing (Dec 2018)

The Faiveley family are the largest vineyard owners in Burgundy, owning around 120ha, spread across the Côtes de Nuits, Beaune and Chalonnaise and encompassing everything from generic Bourgogne up to the grandest of Grand Crus. Their holdings supply the grapes for 5 out of every 6 bottles made by Faiveley, the balance being bought in from carefully selected contract growers.
