CHAMBERTIN

2017 Grand Cru Domaine Bernard Dugat-Py

EN PRIMEUR

(from a .055 ha parcel of vines planted in 1913 at a density of 14,000 vines/ha - vinified with 95% of the stems). A kaleidoscopically broad-ranging nose is impossible to do justice to but the primary aromas derive from various dark berries, spice, violet, tea, earth, forest floor and a hint of the sauvage. The super-sleek, intense, focused and hugely powerful big-bodied flavors possess an abundance of minerality before terminating in an explosively long and muscular finish. This is a borderline massive wine yet it manages to be graceful but even so, this is a wine to buy (if you can find a bottle) and forget you own it. In sum, this is a stunner and one of the wines of the vintage. Drinking range: 2039 - Rating: 94-97 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2019)

There is one barrel of the 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru, a striking wine that soars from the glass with an ethereal bouquet of cherry, raspberry, blood orange, grilled meats, dark chocolate and rich soil tones. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and ineffably complete, distinguished above all by its energy, intensity and integration. Structured around velvety, almost melting tannins, its finish is seemingly interminable. This Chambertin is the finest wine in the Dugat-Py cellar by virtue of its elegance, not its power. The domaine's small parcel is located in the middle of the Chambertin, towards the top, with the rows running north-south. Rating: 95-97 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2019)

The 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru is limited to the usual 250-litre new barrel with just a little de-stemmed fruit. Of the Grand Crus, the oak influence is perhaps the most pronounced here, but there is abundant fruit concentration so hopefully it will be soaked up in time. The palate is well balanced, again, just some wood tannins obscuring the terroir expression although, the finish is very smooth and sensual with hints of dark chocolate and espresso on the aftertaste. Very fine, though I prefer the Mazoyères this year. Drinking range: 2025 - 2050 Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2019)

Can you smell harmony? I can here. Already has the complexity of fruit totally in harmony with the oak, and a complex range of fruit and spice notes. Mineral and peppery but also fine dark fruit. Even a slight mintiness? There’s a depth and richness on the palate that you almost miss with the restrained but fine dark-fruit character. Elegant, almost chalky texture, great freshness and length. A beauty. Both juicy and sophisticated, so approachable with these fine tannins. Drinking range: 2027 - 2040 Rating: 18+ Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Dec 2018)

Just when you think the Dugat-Py range can't get any better, you have a taste of this mind-blowing Chambertin, which gets my vote as the red wine of the vintage. Focussed, floral and beguiling, it has balletic poise and supple, fine-grained tannins, with notes of rose petal, wild strawberry and tangerine accompanied by incredible concentration and palate length from 90-year-old vines. Drinking range: 2027 - 2035 Rating: 99 Tim Atkin MW - Decanter (Nov 2018)

Domaine Dugat-Py, along with only DRC, Roumier, Rousseau and Leroy, is rated in the top Three Star category by the 'Classement' published by the Revue du Vin de France. These are the essence of robust Burgundy, wines of huge scale and concentration. Patience is required, so lay down a few grand bottles for your dotage.
