CHAMBERTIN

2017 Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru Domaine Christophe Perrot-Minot

EN PRIMEUR

Nose has a darker edge than the other Grand Crus here. There is a jolt of energy on the palate. Yes the fruit is ripe, but with such vigour and energy that it races along. Really lovely brightness to the plum and strawberry highlights, clean lines and such drive. This is poised and so well measured. Weight builds but is always without excess. Not glossy, not heavy - just spot on. Walking the tight-rope of impact and excess this nails it. Not wavering at any moment, this delivers with huge fanfare. The balance with minerality is tip top - nothing is out of kilter. Drinking range: 2023 - 2030L&S (Nov 2018)

(from purchased grapes that Perrot has the right to intercede with certain aspects of the viticulture). This too is aromatically very cool and pure and there is plenty of nuance on the liqueur-like aromas of plum, dark cherry, forest floor and a suggestion of humus. The tight, focused and strikingly intense big-bodied flavors possess excellent mid-palate density along with a superbly long finish that, like the Beaux Monts, is akin to rolling small pebbles around in the mouth. This austere, backward and tightly coiled effort will need at least 6 to 8 years to add flesh and complexity and will likely require fully 20 years to reveal its full potential. Drinking range: 2037 - Rating: 92-95 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2019)

The 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru has the most backward and surly nose of Christophe Perrot-Minot’s Grand Crus, but it just needs a few swirls to reveal enticing raspberry, cranberry, brown spice and slightly ferrous aromas. The mineralité starts to reveal itself with aeration. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannin, gorgeous pure raspberry preserve notes mixed with blood orange, sea salt and light quince, and marmalade notes toward the succinct finish. Predictably as it might read, this is the best 2017 from Perrot-Minot. Drinking range: 2022 - 2048 Rating: 94-96 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2019)

Discreet. Perfumed. Black fruits. Sophisticated and pure - very deep and channelled. It is quieter and more mineral than the aromatic Clos de Bèze with a focused persistent finish, streamed with dark graphite minerality. Rating: 19.85 Sarah Marsh MW, The Burgundy Briefing (Dec 2018)

Christophe Perrot-Minot is now the fourth generation of his family producing wine on the estate after his great grandfather Amédée Merme devoted himself to the management and production of wine over 130 years ago. The estate has gone from strength to strength – always keeping the highest standards. Integrated viticulture has been practiced for many years now which has been adapted especially for the terroir. No herbicide or chemical fertilizer is used, instead, Christophe prefers to “stand back and listen to this terroir, only intervening when necessary or when the weather requires it, never systematically.” This is one of the star domaines of the whole of Burgundy.
