CHÂTEAU BEAUMONT

2017 Haut Médoc

Grapes Cab Franc, Cab Sauv, Merlot
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
ABV 13.5%

Tasted twice over primeurs week. Not giving much away. Mineral nose with a dark fruit profile. Quite tight and mute on the palate. There is good structure with some nice acidity and grippy tannins. Slightly reserved at this stage but should be a decent everyday drinker after some time in bottle. Rating: 85 L&S (Apr 2018)

The 2017 Beaumont is a very pretty and expressive Haut-Médoc Cru Bourgeois loaded with character. Grilled herbs, smoke, tobacco, incense and licorice show lovely shades of nuance throughout. Strong Cabernet accents add character. The only real issue is that yields were down a punishing 50%. Drinking range: 2019 - 2027 Rating: 89 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Mar 2020)

The 2017 Beaumont has a pleasant bouquet with brambly black fruit laced with brine and cedar notes, well defined with moderate intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly coarse tannins on the entry. This Beaumont might be a bit "rough around the edges" for some, although it has rustic charm on the off-dry finish. Needs partnering with hearty food. Drinking range: 2020 - 2030 Rating: 88 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2020)

The 2017 Beaumont has a simple blackberry, raspberry preserve and charcoal-tinged bouquet, nicely defined but not intense. It doesn’t have to be. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly tough tannin on the entry, structured and quite dense with a stocky finish that has a pleasant blackberry and iodine aftertaste. Fine. Drinking range: 2020 - 2028 Rating: 86-88 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2018)

Château Beaumont

With its origins in 1824, Château Beaumont is a Cru Bourgeois estate in the Haut-Médoc on the left bank of the Garonne. The property has been owned by Société Grands Millésimes de France since 1986, owners of Château Beychevelle, the fourth growth Saint-Julien.

The 114 hectare estate is planted 53 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot to a vine density of 6,666 vines per hectare with an average age of 20 years for the vines. The vineyard is farmed on environmentally friendly principles, having used Terra Vitis and integrated farming techniques since 2004.

The harvested fruit is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats with three weeks of maceration. Soils are well-drained, deep and gravelly. With an average annual production of 600,000 bottles, the wines are matured in oak barrels (one-third new) for between 12 and 14 months, depending on the vintage. Their wines are characterized by their supple, silky and feminine structure. The tannins are generally mellow and rarely aggressive. All this contributes to making reliable, well-balanced wines full of charm and finesse, offering great value.
