CHÂTEAU BEAUSÉJOUR BÉCOT

2017 1er Grand Cru Classé Saint Emilion

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Saint Emilion & Satellites
Village Saint Emilion
Classification 1er Grand Cru Classé

The 2017 Beau-Séjour Bécot is less immediate on the nose compared to the 2015 and 2016. This takes a little time to unfurl, eventually offering a mixture of red and black fruit, crushed rose petals and just a touch of cassis. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, fine structure and freshness. It is not a powerful Beau-Séjour-Bécot but is imbued with great freshness and whilst it does not possess the structure or depth as the last couple of vintages, I appreciate the mineral aftertaste here. Drinking range: 2022 - 2040 Rating: 91-93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2018)

The tentative blend of the 2017 Beau-Sejour Becot is 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Very deep garnet-purple colored, it opens with an earthy nose of mossy bark, truffles and fertile loam with a core of baked plums, crushed blackberries and black raspberries. The palate is medium-bodied, refreshing and delicately played with energetic fruit and plush tannins, finishing earthy. Rating: 92-94 Lisa Perrotti-Brown, RobertParker.com (Apr 2018)

Lovely dark chocolate and fresh mint aromas are followed by a textured, silky and soft palate. It has a slightly gourmet feel, but is very well handled, not overdone. An enjoyable wine, fresh but intense and with great balance. Drinking range: 2025 - 2035 Rating: 93 Jane Anson, Decanter (Apr 2018)

Coming from an incredible terroir located on the limestone plateau just outside the village, the 2017 Château Beau-Séjour Bécot is a medium-bodied, refined, incredibly elegant 2017 that offers awesome notes of crème de cassis, crushed violets, earth, and a saline-like minerality. Winemaker Thomas Duclos compares the 2017 to 2012, saying the wines will put on weight in barrel as well in bottle. Their 2017 is a fresh, vibrant wine and has tons of potential. The blend is 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, with the Merlot brought in from the 14th to the 22nd of September, and the Cabernets on October 28 and 29. The wine will spend 16 months in 65% new French oak, with the balance in stainless steel, amphora, and larger oak. Tasted twice. Rating: 91-94 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Apr 2018)

Château Beau-Séjour Bécot

Château Beau Séjour Bécot sits on the slopes above Château Angelus, half a mile west of the town of St Emilion. It was once part of a larger Château Beauséjour estate which was owned by the de Carle family who owned Château Figeac. After a couple of changes of ownership, the estate was divided in 1869 between the children of Pierre-Paulin Ducarpe - his daughter's share became Château Beauséjour-Duffau-Lagarosse, whilst his son's, eventually, became Château Beau Séjour Bécot. The Bécot part of the name only became attached in 1969 when Michel Bécot bought the estate, and the Bécot family own it to this day. The controversial addition to Beau Séjour Bécot of some other vineyards owned by the Bécot family, an addition which nearly doubled the size of the estate, led to its demotion from Premier Grand Cru Classé status to "only" Grand Cru Classé status in 1979. Relentless work to prove that the new larger estate was as good, if not better, than before paid off in 1996 when Château Beau Séjour Bécot was re-elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé status. The vineyards are a fairly typical mix of 70% Merlot and 24% Cabernet Franc with a small quantity of Cabernet Sauvignon. Maturation is in mostly new oak.
