Some leafy red fruit. A little bit hollow on the mid-palate. Definitely at the lighter end of the spectrum. Tannins are slightly chewy and drying on the finish. Not the most generous or charming Moulis from the vintage. It's ever so slightly austere but it was undoubtedly a tricky season here and it must be seen in that context. Rating: 86-88 L&S (May 2018)

The 2017 Chasse-Spleen has really come together nicely today. From bottle it is bright, vibrant with a good bit of energy and drive. Sweet tobacco, grilled herbs, mint, dried berry and cedar lead into the super expressive finish. Drinking range: 2020 - 2029 Rating: 90 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Mar 2020)

The 2017 Chasse-Spleen is a wine that I encountered two or three times during my tastings. I have a lot of admiration for this property however, every time I found evidence of under-ripeness on the nose that fed through onto the palate, whilst the finish is rather astringent. After great wines in both 2015 and 2016, the 2017 seems compromised by the growing season. Drinking range: 2021 - 2030 Rating: 86-88 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2018)

Mid cherry red. Leafy graphite and fresh, cedary red and black fruit. Expressive. On the palate, thick and chewy tannins. Just fresh enough. Needs longer than some to be approachable. Drinking range: 2023 - 2030 Rating: 15.5 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2018)

Château Chasse Spleen

Remarkable Chasse-Spleen has always produced high quality wines, which, for the last thirty years, have been worthy of a Third Growth Grand Cru. The English translation of the name of this Cru Bourgeois property is ‘chasing the blues away’, making it one of the most poetic of all names in the Médoc. Owned by Claire Villars, Chasse-Spleen is the leading estate of the little known Moulis appellation, and the wines are of excellent quality. Taking a look around the property (and if you are lucky, being guided round by Jean Pierre Foubet, Claire’s highly entertaining husband) gives you a good idea why they are so well admired. A large estate, although not all plots are next to the château itself; the cellars are impeccably clean, and there is a beautiful tasting room overlooking the barrel cellar and vines.
