CHÂTEAU COS LABORY

2017 Cru Bourgeois Saint Estèphe

EN PRIMEUR

The 2017 Cos-Labory has a commendable bouquet with clean, crisp aromas of blackberry, smoke and light tobacco scents. There is no greenness here, a trait that can spoil some vintages of this Saint-Estèphe. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, plenty of ripe brambly black fruit with a sense of mineralité on the finish. Hey...is this the moment when Cos-Labory produces a great wine? Looks that way here. I look forward to re-tasting this once in bottle and will keep my fingers crossed. Drinking range: 2020 - 2032 Rating: 90-92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2018)

Deep crimson. Cassis, cedar and graphite on the nose. Dark, dry and layered on the palate. Dry, subtle finesse. Elegant and with an attractive mineral aftertaste. Drinking range: 2024 - 2032 Rating: 16.5+ Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2018)

The 2017 Cos Labory is deep garnet-purple colored and scented of blackberry pie, cassis and pencil shavings with touches of violets, garrigue and mossy bark. Medium to full-bodied with a firm frame of ripe, grainy tannins, it has lovely freshness and impressive length. Rating: 90-92 Lisa Perrotti-Brown, RobertParker.com (Apr 2018)

Tight, intense dark fruits and good weight are joined by bristling tannins. 50% new oak shows a little more than is strictly necessary, but it should settle in over the next few years - be sure to give it 5 to 6 years before opening. Drinking range: 2023 - 2034 Rating: 90 Jane Anson, Decanter (Apr 2018)

Inky-colored, with a firm yet concentrated, edgy style, the 2017 Château Cos Labory offers plenty of graphite, toasty oak, violets, and assorted dark fruits. I’d love to see a touch more baby fat and texture on all this structure, but it’s nicely concentrated and certainly has potential. Rating: 88-90 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Apr 2018)

Rather sophisticated for the vintage, this is velvety and linear with fresh acidity, firm tannins and a juicy finish. Rating: 90-91 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2018)

This has a dark and slightly gamey character to the nose. The palate follows up with a supple, broad and open style, carrying a burnt-fruit profile, detailed with liquorice, praline and oak. It possesses a dark, loose and powdery substance, with a wealth of grippy tannins, which dominate in the finish. It lacks definition and freshness, but it has a little substance and ripe grip to it at least. Rating: 87-89 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (Apr 2018)

Like other Bordeaux wine chateaux in the area, the property takes the first part of their name from the famous hill of COS. Wine was being produced at the property in the late 1700′s when the owner at the time, Pierre Gaston died. His three children drew lots for the estate. It went to his son, Hyacinthe. Hyacinthe married Anne Pauty and they had an only–child, Marie–Sany. Marie–Sany later married Francois–Armand Labory and the estate was renamed Cos Gaston Labory. At that time, they were producing more wine than Cos D’Estournel, their closest neighbor. The property was purchased by Louis–Gaspard d’Estournel, the owner of Cos d’Estournel. Gaspard d’Estournel sold the property a few years later after he transferred many of the best vineyards to Cops D’Estournel. in 1922, the estate changes hands again and was sold to Ambrosio and Augusto Weber, for 200,000 Francs. The family still owns the property today.
