CHÂTEAU DOISY DAËNE

2017 2ème Cru Classé Barsac

EN PRIMEUR

The 2017 Doisy-Daëne is so compelling. Rich and ample in the glass, the 2017 just blossoms with a bit of time. Candied apricot, exotic white flowers, mint, hazelnut and chamomile notes confer richness. The 2017 is deep, powerful and wonderfully resonant from start to finish. Moreover, it has very few peers in this vintage, one of them being the top-of-the line L'Extravagant. Drinking range: 2022 - 2037 Rating: 97 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Mar 2020)

The 2017 Doisy-Daëne is a little richer on the nose compared to recent vintages, quite pure with acacia honey, melted wax and touches of almond filtering through with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a viscous opening, finely judged acidity, borrowing some of the weight usually expressed by Doisy-Védrines to create a very satisfying and opulent finish. It does not give the live-wire tension that is common in this Barsac, but it does give plenty of depth and length. Drinking range: 2022 - 2050 Rating: 93-95 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2018)

The 2017 Doisy Daëne has a slightly closed nose with ripe apples and fresh pears accented with sparks of lemon and orange peel plus a touch of fungi. It's very rich and bold in the mouth with balancing freshness and a long earthy finish. Rating: 92-94 Lisa Perrotti-Brown, RobertParker.com (Apr 2018)

The 2017 Château Doisy Daëne is a seriously decadent, thick, opulent beauty that packs serious sweetness in its canned peach, lime peel, and exotic tropical fruit aromas and flavors. While it’s a big wine, it has terrific balance, good density and concentration, and a huge finish. It’s a potential blockbuster Barsac that’s going to have a long life. A fresh and clean young Barsac with honey, dried mangoes and cooked apples that follow through to a medium to full body. Clean and spicy finish. Rating: 92-93 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2018)

Barsac. 85% Sémillon, 15% Sauvignon Blanc. Ripe and expressive on the nose, already complex with almond, bitter orange, vanilla and spiced pear. Viscous and generous on the palate but still beautifully fresh. Powerful almond-paste flavour on the palate but finishes with citrus and apricot. Drinking range: 2025 - 2037 Rating: 17 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2018)

A bold, ripe, unctuous style in the making, with lots of spicy orange, tangerine and peach notes that roll through an exotic, hazelnut-filled finish. Rating: 92-95 James Molesworth, The Wine Spectator (Apr 2018)

This is 85% Semillon and 15% Sauvignon Blanc, with a residual sugar of 124 g/l and a total acidity of 4.5 g/l. It leads with a very pure style on the nose, all minerally white peaches, apricots and tangerines. The palate shows a fat central core of fruit, with a lovely peach and apricot freshness, pure, bright, with yellow peach, vanilla, pineapple and pear, cut with good acidity and minerality. A fabulously vibrant, fresh and exciting style, with sweet fruit which is nicely countered by the bright acidity. Very good potential. Rating: 93-95 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (Apr 2018)

Barsac Deuxième cru 1855 As one might expect, there was originally one Doisy estate. Sometime in the earlier 19th Century, it was divided into three parts - the larger part became Doisy-Vedrines, and two smaller parts became the rarely encountered Doisy-Dubroca and, the part purchased by Jean-Jacques Emmanuel Daëne, Doisy-Daëne. Jean-Jacques' sons later sold another portion of Doisy-Daëne to Doisy-Dubroca. Georges Dubourdieu bought Doisy-Daëne in 1924, and his family still own it to this day. The little over 16ha of vineyard sit sandwiched between Châteaus Coutet and Climens, and are planted with 87% Semillon, 12% Sauvignon Blanc and 1% Muscadelle. The Grand Vin is fermented in stainless-steel, but aged in wood, producing a style that is finer and cleaner than many other wines of the region. It would sit easily alongside the Premier Crus from the area, making Doisy-Daëne a sort of Barsac "super-second". In better vintages, a super-cuvée - L'Extravagant de Doisy Daëne - that rivals Yquem is produced from very late-picked grapes. Pierre Dubourdieu (Georges' son) was not so much interested in the classic dessert wines of the region as dry wines and under his stewardship, in 1949, Doisy-Daëne became the first Sauternes/Barsac producer to make a dry white. This 100% barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc is still produced in small quantities, although the modern generation place more appropriate emphasis on the sweeter end of the spectrum.
