CHÂTEAU GRAND MAYNE

2017 Grand Cru Classé Saint Emilion

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Saint Emilion & Satellites
Village Saint Emilion
Classification Grand Cru Classé

The 2017 Grand Mayne has quite a powerful, voluminous bouquet with red berry fruit, smoke and truffle aromas, not quite delivering the same level of delineation as the previous vintage but still nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannin, clean and precise with a fine bead of acidity. It is a lighter style of Grand Mayne compared to the wines of ten years ago, more nimble on its feet. The finish is lively, uncomplicated and quite mineral-driven, completing what is a fine follow-up to the 2016, though this will drink earlier. Drinking range: 2021 - 2038 Rating: 90-92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2018)

The 2017 Grand Mayne is deep garnet-purple in color and offers up notions of cassis, red currant jelly and plum preserves with hints of cigar box and incense. Medium to full-bodied, it has a solid backbone of firm, grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and spicy. Rating: 89-91 Lisa Perrotti-Brown, RobertParker.com (Apr 2018)

Loads of red and black fruits, hints of sandalwood, incense and dried flowers emerge from the 2017 Château Grand Mayne. Medium to full-bodied, ripe, and rounded on the palate, I love its tannin quality. With rock solid mid-palate depth and plenty of length, it should end up being an outstanding wine. Rating: 89-92 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Apr 2018)

Dark cherry colour. Ripe, spicy dark fruit. The nose promises much but on the palate it is rather chewy and pretty dry on the finish. Drinking range: 2022 - 2027 Rating: 15 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2018)

Château Grand Mayne

A mayne is a large house surrounded by an estate, something which adequately describes Château Grand Mayne, the “grand” bit presumably referring to a time when the estate ran to 250ha with 62ha of vineyard. This was after the Laveau family, who owned Grand Mayne for two and half centuries at least, had purchased Château Soutard to add to their domain. It wasn’t to last, and gradually the estate was divided and sold off and now amounts to 21ha, 1.5km from St Emilion village at the foot of the plateau. Since 1934, Château Grand Mayne has been owned by the Nony family. The vineyards are planted with 76% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, and are around 30 years old. Of the non-classified estates of St Emilion, Château Grand Mayne is generally accounted as one of the best.
