CHÂTEAU LA LAGUNE

2017 3ème Cru Classé Ludon

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Ludon
Classification 3ème Cru Classé

A wine that captures the best of the vintage. Medium bodied, dark berry fruit is joined by dried herbs, stone and some cedar notes. Very elegant. High pitched acidity and powdery tannins keep it focused and fresh. Quite tight at this stage but should be approachable without too much time in the cellar. Rating: 90 L&S (May 2018)

The 2017 La Lagune was picked from 12 September until 30 September at 31hl/ha, matured in 50% new oak. It has a very clean and pure bouquet, quite floral in style, with scents of raspberry confit, crushed stone, a touch of mint and pressed flowers. This is precise and focused, one of the most refined bouquet that I have encountered on a La Lagune at this early stage. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chalky tannin on the entry that presage a tensile, mineral-driven La Lagune. There is almost a flint-like element to this wine, like the nose, the palate extremely precise with a sustained Pauillac-inspired finish with pencil lead on the aftertaste. Drinking range: 2022 - 2036 Rating: 90-92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2018)

Deepest cherry red. Lots of peppery spice over the nicely dusty cassis aroma. That same dusty note on the palate, relatively lightweight in the middle but the tannins are extremely fine to keep it in balance. Fresh and persistent with a gently leafy finish. Drinking range: 2022 - 2035 Rating: 16.5 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2018)

A brilliant Haut-Médoc, the 2017 Château La Lagune has impressive density and depth as well as medium body, a straight, tight, focused texture, a big mid-palate, and classic dark fruits, tobacco, and earth aromas and flavors. It’s well worth seeking out and will keep for two decades. Rating: 88-91 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Apr 2018)

Château La Lagune

Haut-Médoc Troisième cru 1855 Château La Lagune is the highest ranked property outside of the principal Haut-Médoc appellations. It is in Ludon-Médoc, about halfway between the village of Margaux and the city of Bordeaux. Like so many Bordeaux estates, the early 20th Century was a period of considerable decline - by the time La Lagune's saviour George Brunette bought the near derelict estate in 1958 there were just 4ha of vineyard left. He set about a whirlwind renovation and a complete replanting of the vineyard, although a few short years later, in 1961, he sold La Lagune to Champagne Ayala. Today, Château La Lagune is owned by the Frey family who continue to drive the estate forward. The 80ha of sandy-gravel vineyard are planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and an unusually high 10% Petit Verdot. The Grand Vin spends 18 months in wood, with 55% being new every year (down from a previously over impressive 100% new). Interestingly, once La Lagune barriques have been used twice, they are sent off to the Rhône to be used by Paul Jaboulet, also owned by the Frey family. Today, Château La Lagune is one of the wines to look out for in the Haut-Médoc, usually outperforming its Third Growth status, whilst its less than lofty appellation keeps a lid on the price. Certified organic from the 2016 vintage.
