CHÂTEAU PHÉLAN SÉGUR

2017 Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel Saint Estèphe

EN PRIMEUR

The 2017 Phélan-Ségur, was harvested as late as possible, starting on 14 September with the Merlot and starting the Cabernet around 27 September and finished around mid-October. It is matured in 50% new oak. It appears to show more red fruit on the nose than its Saint-Estèphe peers, just a little disjointed at first but melding together with time, raspberry and briary scents mixed with dried rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, quite foursquare and masculine, needing more flesh to come through on the finish. Drinking range: 2020 - 2032 Rating: 89-91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2018)

Tasted both at Hangar 14 and at Phélan Ségur. 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc. Dark black cherry with purple core. Ripe, bright cassis plus a 'wild' aroma of bramble and elderberry. Firm dry texture giving a whole with sufficient mid-palate fruit. Taut and chewy/chalky but in harmony. Deeper/thicker tannins than on most wines but with plenty of dark fruit at the core. Firm and chewy but still juicy on the long finish. Has plenty of stuffing and should gain elegance with time in bottle. Drinking range: 2027 - 2037 Rating: 16.5+ Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2018)

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Phélan Ségur gives up notes of black plums and fresh blackberries with an earthy undercurrent of damp soil, truffles and mossy bark. Medium-bodied, soft, plush and with a good core of fruit, it gives an earthy finish. Rating: 87-89 Lisa Perrotti-Brown, RobertParker.com (Apr 2018)

New owner, Philippe Van de Vyvere as of 2017. This is a wine that settles into the glass. It has confident, firm and rich fruit, good aromatics and structured tannins that have been well extracted. Bristling, young and a clear life ahead of it. The tannins vibrate through the palate but are very much at the front of the mouth right now, raring to go. Exceptionally good for the vintage. Retasted several times. Drinking range: 2025 - 2037 Rating: 93 Jane Anson, Decanter (Apr 2018)

The deep, saturated purple-colored 2017 Phélan Ségur is a classic, well-made wine in the vintage that has notable depth and density as well as textbook Saint-Estèphe notes of ripe black fruits, leafy herbs/tobacco, and loamy earth. It shows the fresher, cooler-climate style of the vintage yet is far from austere and has loads to love. Rating: 89-92 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Apr 2018)

This is tight and firm with a linear precision and dark fruit. Medium to full body. Bright and lightly juicy. Pretty center palate. A poised and focused young wine. Rating: 92-93 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2018)

This has a core of dark plum and cherry paste flavors, with waves of warm tobacco and smoldering charcoal checking in on the finish. Has character and a bit more depth than most of its peers in the vintage. Rating: 89-92 James Molesworth, The Wine Spectator (Apr 2018)

From a 70-hectare vineyard, planted at an impressive 10,000 vines per hectare, comes this Cabernet-dominated cuvée. The fruit was picked from September 14th through to October 4th, and the chosen blend is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, with 34% Merlot and a tiny 1% contribution from the Cabernet Franc. The overall yield was 45 hl/ha, which fits with the absence of frost in this appellation. It has a dark, robust, richly desiccated fruit character on the nose. The palate is full, grippy and fresh, with a pile of bright tannin beneath it all. A solidly composed style, a very serious contender, with toasted fruit, praline, cigar and tobacco oak, all sitting on a bed of ripe and velvety tannins. A rich and imposing style, typical of St Estèphe, with good potential. Rating: 91-93 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (Apr 2018)

Château Phélan-Ségur is a Cru Bourgeois St. Estèphe property that produces textbook meaty, solid and long-lived St. Estèphes. It was bought by Xavier Gardinier in 1985 and is now run by his sons, Thierry and Laurent. Phélan-Ségur's 66 hectares of vineyards are well-sited near the Grionde estuary and lies on well drained gravel soils. The vineyards are bordered by those of Château Montrose and Château Calon-Ségur. Phélan-Ségur's wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (30%) and Cabernet Franc (10%). The grapes are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats and the wine is then matured in oak barriques (30% new) for 15 months. Phélan-Ségur usually requires at least 5-7 years of bottle ageing to show at its best and the best vintages can continue improving for up to 15 years.
