CLOS DE VOUGEOT

2017 Grand Cru Domaine Faiveley

EN PRIMEUR

Black cherries and plums with an intense, earthy note. Great depth and structure, the power married to cool freshness that gives this great vitality. Enormously long and complex finish. Try to wait until at least 2023. Drinking range: 2023 - Rating: 96 Nick Stock, www.jamessuckling.com (Feb 2019)

Good impact. Again like the Clos St Denis - there is a big step up in feel and power. The intensity is great. There is a 'just ripe' note to the fruit and then a mineral drive. Super fine tannins add frame and hold - but this is an attractive flowing wine and is so clearly Grand Cru material. Impressively lithe and pushing. Another really good Clos Vougeot. Drinking range: 2022 - 2030L&S (Nov 2018)

A sleek red, with well-defined cherry, floral, spice and earth notes aligned to a firm structure. This is reserved for now, with an expanding finish that emphasizes the oak spice and dark fruit elements. Drinking range: 2022 - 2040 Rating: 94 Bruce Sanderson, The Wine Spectator (Mar 2020)

(blended from 3 separate parcels). Here too the wood treatment is less than subtle though on the ripe and fresh earth-inflected aromas of wild red and dark berries, violet and a hint of leather. There is better volume to the rich and well-muscled flavors that possess better mid-palate concentration if less refinement, all wrapped in a youthfully austere and impressively persistent if rustic finish. I like the complexity and overall, there is just a bit more here. Drinking range: 2032 - Rating: 91-94 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2019)

The 2017 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru offers up a complex bouquet of smoked duck, dark wild berries, incense, dark chocolate and earthy spices. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, velvety and multidimensional, with impressive depth and concentration at the core, supple tannins and a long, expansive finish. This is a serious Clos Vougeot. Rating: 92-94 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2019)

This is a distinctly serious Clos de Vougeot from the Faiveleys, sourced from three parcels in the Clos, two high and one lower, adding up to 1.3ha. It's rich, dense and showing what technical director, Jérôme Flous calls 'attractive rusticity', a sensitively oaked wine that's spicy and well balanced. Drinking range: 2024 - 2030 Rating: 94 Tim Atkin MW - Decanter (Jan 2019)

Cask sample. Mid cherry red. Pretty, sweet-fruited and seductive. Generous and already velvety on the palate. Sweet-fruited on the mid palate, deep-fruited and long. Drinking range: 2024 - 2035 Rating: 17 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Dec 2018)

A rich aroma. It is fulsome and succulent and has shoulders. A big and showy wine. Dark fruit. Powerful. Not sophisticated, but plentiful muscle and a long burly finish. Deep and rich. Jerome says “a Land-Rover with leather interior. I am very happy with it this year.” Rating: 18.95 Sarah Marsh MW, The Burgundy Briefing (Dec 2018)

The Faiveley family are the largest vineyard owners in Burgundy, owning around 120ha, spread across the Côtes de Nuits, Beaune and Chalonnaise and encompassing everything from generic Bourgogne up to the grandest of Grand Crus. Their holdings supply the grapes for 5 out of every 6 bottles made by Faiveley, the balance being bought in from carefully selected contract growers.
