CÔTE RÔTIE

2017 Côte Rozier Domaine Patrick & Christophe Bonnefond

EN PRIMEUR

More expressive than the Couzou with the mineral core being a little more juicy, blackcurrant, violets, rose petal and elegant tight tannins all give the impression of a serious wine, although it is muscular it is still very elegant and pure with that classic Northern Rhône trademark violet-laced fruit Drinking range: 2022 - 2029L&S (Feb 2019)

Saturated violet. Expansive, smoke-tinged cherry, dark berry preserve, peony and incense aromas show excellent clarity, and a peppery element adds spicy lift. Juicy and energetic on the palate, offering densely packed yet shockingly lively red and blue fruit and floral pastille flavors and a touch of star anise. Shows superb energy on the seamless, strikingly long finish, which is firmed by sneaky tannins and sharpened by a kick of smoky minerality. Drinking range: 2025 - 2035 Rating: 95 Josh Raynolds, www.vinousmedia.com (Apr 2020)

There’s a complex array of apricots and red cherries on offer here with fresh and fragrant flowers and spices. The palate has a very neatly crafted set of cherries and summer berries with peaches, fresh spices and stony freshness to close. Drink or hold. Rating: 93 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Oct 2019)

Ripe, spice-accented black/blue fruits, liquorice and olive paste on the explosively perfumed nose. Stains the palate with concentrated blackberry, boysenberry and violet pastille flavors and steadily picks up spiciness and florality with aeration. Rich and broad but lively as well, finishing with outstanding clarity, steadily building tannins and strong, blue fruit-driven persistence. Rating: 93-95 Josh Raynolds, www.vinousmedia.com (Jul 2019)

From a site just beside La Landonne, in the northern sector, and sees slightly more new oak, being brought up in 400-liter 25-30% new oak. I think the gem in the lineup is the 2017 Côte Rôtie Côte Rozier. This is awesome, straight up sexy stuff that boasts a medium ruby color, perfumed notes of black raspberries, pepper, and dried flowers, medium to full body, and sweet, sweet tannins. I finished my note with “Love it.” Rating: 93-96 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Feb 2019)

Christophe and Patrick took over this family domaine in 1990. It extends to ten hectares, with small amounts of IGP 'Collines Rhodaniennes' Viognier (0.5 hectare) and Syrah (1 hectare) as well as the Condrieu and the three cuvées of Côte-Rôtie.

The Condrieu (1 hectare) comes from the granite soils of the Côte Chatillon. It is fermented in 440l barrels (with 30% new wood) at 18C and aged on the lees for ten months.

The 'Colline de Couzou' Côte-Rôtie comes from several plots in the north and south of the appellation, on schist and granite, about six hectares in total. All the reds are fermented in stainless steel with around 20% whole bunches. The Couzou is then aged in 400l barrels for eighteen months, with 20% new wood. Production hovers just above 2000 cases a year.

The Côte Rozier (0.5 hectare) is in the north of the appellation, on schist and mica-schist. The vinification is the same, but the percentage of new wood for this and the Rochains goes up to 30% and the élevage in barrel is extended to 20 months. Only about 160 cases a year. The Rochains (1 hectare), a slightly bigger cuvée at 300 cases a year, is also in the north of the appellation, the other side of La Landonne, on a soil of schist with lots of iron oxide. These are the oldest vines of the domaine.
