A new release for 2017 is Sērikos from Croft. This translates as 'silk' (a nod to history as silk was produced at Roeda after phylloxera destroyed the vineyard) and is well named as the feel is polished and sleek. This selection from the oldest vines in their prized Quinta da Roêda vineyard is another demonstration of quite how well old vines fared in this very hot vintage. A huge step up in terms of precise floral aromatic intensity and powerfully weighted flow. There is energy too and a deep sleek core. Notes of liquorice play well with the dark chocolate and dense dark fruits. A gloss keeps this moving well - it has an impressive presence. L&S (May 2019)

Sērikos is so-called because in the chaos after phylloxera the owners of Roeda turned to mulberry trees and silkworms as a source of income. They did eventually replant with vines, of course, and those vines are now old – very old. Serikos – "silk" – does indeed have a beautifully silky texture allied to a tense, tight structure and aromas of eucalyptus and cistus, very poised. If there was a year which cried out for a Vintage Port to be made from the old vines at Quinta da Roêda, 2017 was it. The first Sērikos has all the typicity of Roêda, with its opulence, silky texture and fine scented quality.
