CROZES HERMITAGE

2017 Cuvée Lhony Domaine Gaylord Machon

Grapes Syrah
Colour Red
Origin France, Rhône
District Northern Rhône
Village Crozes Hermitage
ABV 14%

The richer and more intense of the two cuvees named after his son's Lhony being the younger. Super concentrated fruit, black fruits, redcurrant, violets and hint of pitch/aniseed too. Sweet violets flow through the mid palate, vibrant juicy acidity all help focus the wine, it wears the spice from the oak very well and has great tapenade black olive twist too. Gaylord is making great wine and each vintage the wines seem to get incrementally better, great news for all, especially lovers of great Crozes Hermitage. L&S (Mar 2021)

Tasted at L&S Rhône Tasting - 20/09/2022
There's a little blackcurrant pastille showing through on the nose and a resinous tang. Fairly full-bodied, but with a good sense of freshness. The tannins are still quite chewy, but this has some complexity and texture to enjoy. The slight drawback is the fairly high alcohol, but this is otherwise very good.
Drinking range: 2022 - 2024 Rating: 92 Matt Walls, Decanter.com (Nov 2022)

[The Global Syrah Masters 2021] Medium ruby, brick red glint. Lots of olive and green peppercorn on the nose with some red fruit. Palate too, peppery, olive, with red cherry and blackberry fruit, nice freshness. No overt oak, background cedar, long finish with plums and spice. Good balanced style. Very classic. Rating: Silver medal The Drinks Business (Nov 2021)

Named after Gaylord's youngest son, Lhony, this wine is aged for 16 months in demi-muids of various ages. It's smooth, rich and very concentrated for a Crozes, showing real vibrancy and freshness with some strict, saline tannins keeping the fruit in order. It has focus and intensity of expression, leading to a long finish. The fruit overwhelms the oak, which works well in the background. Drinking range: 2020 - 2022 Rating: 92 Matt Walls, Decanter.com (Oct 2018)

Domaine Gaylord Machon

Domaine Gaylord Machon is in Beaumont-Monteux, in the heart of the Crozes-Hermitage appellation, on 'les châssis' a name which derives from the numerous large stones found in this area, which make for a particularly free-draining soil. 5% of the domaine is Marsanne and Roussanne, from which a tiny amount of white is made, the rest being all Syrah for the two cuvées of red.

All the work in the vines is manual, including the harvest. Gaylord took over 5 hectares of family vines in 2002, the produce of which he took to the co-op, like his forbears, until 2008, when he began to sell the grapes of what was then an enlarged 8.5 hectares to Paul Jaboulet Ainé. In 2011 he made his first wine. He is a qualified winemaker, and had trained with Luc Tardy and Laurent Combier, among others.

Gaylord built his own vinification cellar in 2014, and today vinifies about half his red production and all the white.
