2017 Grand Cru Domaine J. Confuron Cotetidot

EN PRIMEUR

There is a buzz here. Lovely pert, deeply dark fruit. But this is upfront and ripe flavoured middle. Lots of spice, lots of whole bunch chewiness. I like the power very much, there is leather and damson and morello cherry that builds to a darkness that descends to shroud the palate. Serious dark fruit and brooding depth. Great feel though such suave texture of tannins. This is one of the few 2017s that you can see really will need time. Impressive stuff with one heck of a journey ahead. Tuck away for at least 10 years and it will be a joy well in to its second decade. Drinking range: 2025 - 2033L&S(Nov 2018)

An elegant and attractively layered if highly restrained nose only grudgingly reveals a floral-inflected essence of dark berry fruit aromas along with hints of spice and cassis. The middle weight flavors possess a succulent and refined mid-palate that contrasts with the concentrated, powerful and robust finish that is markedly austere. This was tricky to taste in Yves Confruon's warren of a cellar, not because of the lack of light but because it had completed its malolactic fermentation late. It's a serious, backward wine at the best of times, but seemed to be even more so this time. It's firm, chewy and densely structured with meaty, palate-challenging tannins and the concentration to age. Drinking range: 2023 - 2030 Rating: 94-94 Tim Atkin MW - Decanter(Dec 2018)

It is a powerful and very ripe and slightly reduced at the moment. This is the sturdiest Echezeaux I have tasted in 2017, dense and the most robustly tannic, built to age well. Rating: 19 Sarah Marsh MW, The Burgundy Briefing(Dec 2018)

Vignerons since the seventeenth century, the Confuron family has always selected and propagated vines to ensure that their plant material produces the highest quality, and they even have a clone of Pinot named after them - 'Pinot Confuron'.

The domaine has several Grands Cru vineyards as well as two hectares of the great Vosne Romanée Premier Cru 'Les Suchots'. There are around 12 hectares in all. The vines have never seen chemical weedkillers, and are ploughed and managed organically.

The Confurons have always used whole-bunch fermentation, picking very late, which really is a necessity if the stems are to be properly ripe and not give green flavours to the wine. A bit like the Thévenets with their whites in the Mâconnais, they pick so much later that they can seem to have different vintages to everyone else. Yves thinks that 2007 was their great vintage of the first decade of this millennium, and he'd probably be the only grower in the Côte de Nuits who would say that. Yves also makes the wines at Domaine de Courcelin Pommard, in the same way.

Yves, opinionated and laconical as ever, dismisses those who make pale wines by 'infusion' and says that failing to get the whole bunches properly ripe - and using all the bunch - is failing to get everything the terroir can offer. The wines he makes are dark, richly concentrated, and often hard to taste in their development, but experience shows that they age brilliantly

Wines bought en primeur are scheduled to arrive in the UK over the course of the next eighteen months. If you do not wish to take home delivery, you may wish to consider where you would like the wines shipped on arrival in the UK. Lea & Sandeman offers duty paid and in bond storage through a dedicated storage company called Elephant Storage. While helpful, we do not require a firm commitment on delivery destination to process your primeur order at this stage. Our team will be in contact with you when your wines arrive in the UK to confirm the necessary delivery details.

OFFER: All wines are offered subject to availability and final confirmation.

PRICING: All prices are quoted IN BOND ex-VAT, by the case size stated. Please double check that the desired case size does match what is being offered as wines are variously listed in threes, sixes, dozens, halves and larger formats.

DELIVERY - TIMING: This is a primeur offer so the wines are not yet physically available for delivery. They will be shipped to the UK over the next eighteen months. Generally wines are shipped to your nominated location once the whole order has landed in our London City Bond account. If you require wines to be delivered by a certain date, please advise us at the time of ordering. We do not anticipate any problems but please be aware that delays to delivery may occur should Britain's possible departure from the European Union result in additional border customs checks or other regulatory requirements. Any additional or unforeseen duties, tariffs, charges or other financial liabilities relating to 'Brexit' must be due to the customer and will be added to orders as required.

DELIVERY - FEES: In bond delivery to an Elephant Storage account (for more information see 'Storage Options' opposite) is free of charge. Transfer of wines to any third party bond (i.e. not Elephant Storage) will incur an administration charge of £16.50 + VAT for all orders under £1,000. If you require wines duty paid, please indicate this in your Wishlist order form. A duty & VAT invoice will be raised once all the wines on your order are available for shipment. Once the relevant duty & VAT has been settled, we will ship the wines to your nominated address as per our normal duty paid Delivery Terms.

PAYMENT: All orders will be invoiced for immediate payment by cheque, cash, debit card or cleared funds to our account. We regret that we cannot accept credit cards for primeur orders.
