ECHO

2017 de Lynch Bages Pauillac Château Lynch Bages

EN PRIMEUR

74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc. The second wine of Lynch Bages is fruit forward with good integration of oak. It has a deep dark berry flavour - good extraction. Nice lines though and great burst of acidity that keeps this bright. Very enjoyable already. Rating: 89 L&S (Apr 2018)

The 2017 Echo de Lynch Bages is soft, open-knit and easygoing. A rush of sweet red cherry and red plum fruit gives the 2017 its open-knit, distinctive personality. Perhaps it is a bit less expressive than it can be in top vintages, but the balance here is impeccable. Pretty floral and spice notes add an attractive element of suaveness to this lush, supple wine. Drinking range: 2020 - 2029 Rating: 90 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Mar 2020)

The 2017 Echo de Lynch Bages is matured in one-year old barrels for 12 months. It has a light, pencil box and tobacco scented bouquet that just needs more fruit intensity. The palate has a pleasant rounded entry, a little soft in the middle with moderate acidity and an agreeable if not memorable tobacco finish. Drink over the next 4 to 6 years. Drinking range: 2020 - 2026 Rating: 87 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2020)

The 2017 Echo de Lynch Bages, aged in one-year old barrels for 12 months, has a light blackberry and earthy bouquet, a little cedar tucked in underneath, perhaps not quite as precise as the 2016 last year. The palate is medium-bodied with light and quite supple tannin, smooth and harmonious in the mouth, if just a tad short towards the finish. Drinking range: 2019 - 2026 Rating: 86-88 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2018)

74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc. 12 months in one-year-old barrels. Black core, purple rim. Intense, pure cassis on the nose – essence of Cabernet. Super-supple, extreme finesse in the tannins and really elegant while still having lots of dark fruit. Complete, refined, and fruity. Fine, dark-fruited finish. Drinking range: 2021 - 2029 Rating: 16.5 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2018)

The second wine is the 2017 Echo de Lynch Bages. It’s a soft, forward, effort that has solid notes of cherry and currant fruits intermixed with plenty of leafy herbs and lavender. With supple, polished tannin, notable purity and plenty of length, it’s a charmer that’s going to drink nicely in its youth yet keep for a decade or more. Rating: 88-90 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Apr 2018)

A layered and juicy red with blackberry and wet-earth character. Full-bodied, rich and juicy. Well done for second wine of Lynch. Rating: 92-93 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2018)

Pauillac Cinquième cru 1855 Thomas Lynch emigrated to Bordeaux from Galway in Ireland in 1691. He had two children and it was his son Thomas who associated the family name with Bordeaux by inheriting Lynch-Bages through his wife, and buying Lynch-Moussas and Dauzac in Margaux. Jean-Charles Cazes, who had recently bought Château Les Ormes de Pez in St Estèphe, took the tenancy of Lynch-Bages in 1934, and bought the property outright five years later. It has been the ownership of the Cazes family, who still own the estate, which turned Château Lynch Bages into the leading estate it is today, far exceeding the seemingly lowly 5th growth status bestowed upon it in 1855. There are 90ha of vines in the small village of Bages, just south of Pauillac. Red grapes are planted to 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Wines are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel before ageing in wood (60% new) for 15 months. There has been a second wine produced at Lynch-Bages since 1978 that was originally called Château Haut Bages Averous, but has recently been renamed Echo de Lynch Bages. A small amount of Château Lynch Bages Blanc is made from 40% each of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon and 20% Muscadelle.
