FELTON ROAD

2017 Pinot Noir Bannockburn

Grapes Pinot Noir
Colour Red
Origin New Zealand, South Island
ABV 13.5%
Vineyard Bannockburn

Delicate red fruit notes—a mix of strawberry, raspberry and cherry—appear on the nose of the 2017 Pinot Noir. They're joined by hints of tea, dried spices and thyme, giving the wine ample complexity. It's medium-bodied and supple, with a long, silky finish. The focus at Felton Road has shifted toward more elegance and red fruit, and this is a fine example of that. Drinking range: 2019 - 2025 Rating: 92 Joe Czerwinski, www.robertparker.com (Aug 2019)

The 2017 Bannockburn Pinot Noir has a lovely, understated bouquet with blackberry and briary aromas and a subtle earthy/forest floor note loitering in the wings. The palate is well balanced with fine tannin and gentle grip in the mouth, but nothing overly powerful. It is a "natural" Pinot Noir leaning towards a broodier style, yet clearly very well made and expressive of its terroir. Excellent. Drinking range: 2019 - 2028 Rating: 91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Nov 2018)

Complex, brambly red-cherry and red-plum aromas with a lightly sappy, forest-floor edge. The palate has a super smooth array of vibrant red cherries and a clearly defined, layered texture. Drink now. Screw cap. Rating: 94 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Oct 2018)

Elegant, fresh and vibrant, this red starts off wonderfully perfumed, with lavender, white pepper and green tea notes that accentuate the purity of the cherry and raspberry flavors. Polished tannins still provide some grip on the finish, where white truffle and forest floor details linger. (Mary-Ann Worobiec) Drinking range: 2018 - 2032 Rating: 96 The Wine Spectator, www.winespectator.com (Jul 2018)

Felton Road

Felton Road and Rippon are undoubtedly the two leading vineyards in Central Otago, both making Pinots that are finely textured with fresh fruit flavours, rather than the 'fruit bombs' that so many others produce. Felton Road has been totally organic and biodynamic across their three Bannockburn vineyards since 2005. They have been certified by Demeter since 2009. After that there are more differences than similarities.
While Rippon, at Wanaka is on schist, Felton Road in Banockburn is on clay and calcareous loess. It is also very much in the rain shadow of the Main Divide. Irrigation is used at Rippon to help establish young vines, but dry farming is possible once the vines get their roots down, while at Felton Road permanent irrigation is required for the entire vineyard.
