GEVREY CHAMBERTIN

2017 1er Cru Cazetiers Domaine Faiveley

EN PRIMEUR

Good attack, More drive than the Lavaux St Jacques and this is nicely loaded with plum and cherry fruit. The core has a good ripeness - but there is an edge of more crisp pep, which adds a useful lift. It has a nice juicy flow and purity of fruit, but there is an immediate pleasure here. The fruit is already so inviting it seems this is ready to go, a real pleasure to taste. It will be interesting to see how this evolves but it would seem this should be delicious drinking over the next 3-5 years while we wait for the 2015's and 2016s to mature. Drinking range: 2019 - 2024L&S (Nov 2018)

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru is very perfumed on the nose, offering confit-like red berry fruit, blood orange and raspberry jam. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine delineation, nice poise and a grippy finish. There’s nice sapidity here, and the constituent parts are all in pace – they just need time to knit together. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. Drinking range: 2025 - 2045 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2022)

Concentrated powerful purple, with significant intensity on the nose. Very slightly vegetal, but there is a sumptuous richness of fruit behind, though remaining quite fluid in style. The fruit finishes off very well at the back. Tasted: September 2021 Rating: 92 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Sept 2021)

Domaine Faiveley now possess fully four hectares in this appellation, and the 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers is excellent, unfurling in the glass with aromas of small wild berries, spices, bergamot and espresso roast. On the palate, it's full-bodied, ample and gourmand, with velvety tannins, a plush core of succulent fruit and a long, expansive finish. Rating: 91-93 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2019)

(from a huge 3.96 ha parcel). Here the wood regimen is no longer subtle though it stops short of masking the beautifully layered aromas of plum, spice, dark currant and freshly turned earth. The highly energetic and delineated middle weight plus flavors exude noticeable minerality on the powerful and focused finish that displays outstanding depth and persistence. Moreover, the finish really fans out as it sits on the palate. Drinking range: 2029 - Rating: 91-94 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2019)

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers comes from Faiveley’s substantial four-hectare parcel. I find this has more gumption and detail than the Lavaux Saint-Jacques at the moment. The nose features layers of blackberry, raspberry and crushed stone aromas, and the sweet, candied palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin. Blood orange and quince infuse the red fruit toward the finish. Excellent. Drinking range: 2022 - 2038 Rating: 91-93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2019)

Lovely intensity on the nose... lots of red fruits and spice. Some higher and lower tones. This is ripe, rich and yet has a lightness and energy. There is a minerality threaded through the wine. There is excellent tension and a long and bright finish. I like the shimmer on the finish. Impressive with the sweetness of fruit wrapped around the minerality. Rating: 18.75 Sarah Marsh MW, The Burgundy Briefing (Dec 2018)

The Faiveley family are the largest vineyard owners in Burgundy, owning around 120ha, spread across the Côtes de Nuits, Beaune and Chalonnaise and encompassing everything from generic Bourgogne up to the grandest of Grand Crus. Their holdings supply the grapes for 5 out of every 6 bottles made by Faiveley, the balance being bought in from carefully selected contract growers.
