LE MONTRACHET

2017 Marquis de Laguiche Grand Cru Joseph Drouhin

EN PRIMEUR

This is youthfully restrained for now with exotic essence of lemon, lime and grapefruit. The intensity and purity of the aromas is really captivating. Strong, flinty minerals and stones, too. The palate has a very plush, richly textural and expansive feel with extremely powerful tension between exceptionally concentrated citrus fruit and extremely intense acidity. Wow! Try from 2022. Picked between the 5th of September and the 8th. Long and powerful mineral drive. Good and clean - but sleek too. A green-edged citrus fruit is the icing on richer, weightier stone-fruit lurking a bit below the radar for now. Really good feel of nice matter and density. This is long and clean for now but there will be more, for sure. That supple weight will broaden and fill out with time. One to watch, this is fine and intense. Just 30% New Oak. L&S (Nov 2018)

The 2017 Montrachet Grand Cru is slightly deeper in color. This has a gorgeous bouquet of lemon thyme, orange blossom and crushed stone, all very focused, followed by an emerging touch of mintiness. The harmonious palate is powerful, ripe and slightly vanilla-y; it just lacks a little breeding and panache. A bold and brassy yet cerebral Montrachet that will need a lot of time. This surpasses all my expectations from barrel. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune. Drinking range: 2027 - 2065 Rating: 98 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Aug 2021)

(from a 2.06 ha parcel on the Puligny side). This is also quite aromatically restrained with its decidedly cool and relatively airy nose that mixes a dollop of wood toast with plenty of floral, citrus and white-fleshed fruit scents. The super-fine but intense and tautly muscular large-scaled flavors possess a subtle minerality that carries over to the gorgeously complex, persistent and balanced finish. As it should be, this is very clearly built-to-age and a wine that should enjoy an extended maturity curve. Drinking range: 2029 - Rating: 95 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jun 2019)

Smells tighter and a little more dusty than the Corton-Charlemagne. Richer fruit flavour on the palate compared with the Marquis de Laguiche Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeot, citrus veering to apricot. Creamy, deep, powerful and endlessly long. Drinking range: 2024 - 2037 Rating: 19 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Dec 2018)

Cloudy appearance. Aromas of nectarine, lemon, lime, white flowers, chalk and iodine convey atypical early sex appeal for Montrachet. Thick, chewy and voluminous but not a bit coarse. Less powerful and austere than the Corton-Charlemagne but with a real Roto-Rooter of a finish that saturates and cleanses the palate. A distinctly refined wine with serious opulence allied to lovely salinity and lift--and massive in the context of this cellar. This very chewy, harmonious Montrachet shows great potential. Rating: 92-95 Stephen Tanzer, www.vinousmedia.com (Sept 2018)

Despite the size of their vineyard holding, not all Drouhin's wines come from their own domaine, but most of the other wines do come from long-term contracts, such as exists with the Marquis de Laguiche wines. In all but name these wines are 'Domaine' wines, and the vineyards are cared for and the wines vinified with exactly the same care.
