MAZIS CHAMBERTIN

2017 Grand Cru Domaine Faiveley

EN PRIMEUR

On the nose there is a really attractive note of cassis essence here, which follows to the palate with a regal feeling. Richly ripe and a supple breadth - but with a fine-grained texture and gentle grip that just holds this ample and rich weight of deep, red fruit. Impressive tension keeps it alive and with great ping. Yes. The power and velvety push is very enchanting. Drinking range: 2019 - 2030L&S (Nov 2018)

The 2017 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has a fulsome, seductive bouquet of maraschino cherries, crushed strawberry, orange blossom and light tangerine aromas. The palate is almost pixelated on the entry and shows wonderful acidity and mineralité . Tensile from beginning to end, culminating in a vivid, almost sorbet-fresh finish. This is a superb Mazis. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. Drinking range: 2025 - 2055 Rating: 95 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2022)

Dense full purple, a little bit of barrel toast, medium density, some length, a pleasing ripeness to the fruit without going too far. Perhaps it could be a little fresher at the finish, but that will doubtless resolve with time. Tasted: September 2021 Rating: 94 Jasper Morris - Inside Burgundy  (Sept 2021)

This beautiful red evokes violet, raspberry, strawberry and kirsch aromas and flavors. Tightens up on the palate, showing more oak as this winds down on the finish. All the components are here, just needs time to come together. Terrific length. Best from 2023 through 2045. Drinking range: 2023 - 2045 Rating: 96 Bruce Sanderson, The Wine Spectator (Feb 2020)

One of the high points of the range is the 2017 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru, a striking wine that wafts from the glass with aromas of dark berries, tar, spices, grilled game, licorice, violets and cherries. On the palate, it's full-bodied, deep and lavish, with real concentration at the core, supple tannins, tangy acids and a long, mouthwatering finish. Rating: 92-95 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2019)

(from both Mazis Haut and Bas where the two parcels total a remarkable 1.20 ha). Here the expressive nose isn’t quite as toasty but it’s still far from subtle while managing not to unduly mask the more sauvage-inflected dark berry and forest floor scents. There good density and solid power to the muscular yet reasonably refined flavors that also evidence ample minerality on the beautifully long finale where the supporting tannins are slightly riper. This too should age effortlessly and I often prefer the Latricières but in 2017, the Mazis appears to have a slight edge in quality. Drinking range: 2032 - Rating: 92-95 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2019)

The 2017 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is a blend of the original Faiveley parcel plus around 0.5 hectares gained through their acquisition of Dupont-Tisserandot. It has quite an intense bouquet of blackberry, briar and wild strawberry scents, coming across a little burly compared to the more nuanced Latricières-Chambertin. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, the palate perhaps showing more potential than the aromatics at the moment. There is very good weight here, fine mineralité and quite a precise, sustained finish. Give it five or six years in bottle. Drinking range: 2022 - 2048 Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2019)

Cask sample. Mid cherry red. Seductive dark-red fruit but you can tell there is more to come. Dry, rather leaner than I expected on the palate, could do with a little more fruit depth at the core but it’s balanced and elegant. Drinking range: 2025 - 2035 Rating: 17 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Dec 2018)

“The star of the beginning of ageing with the Charmes. It has perfect maturity, not too ripe.” (Jerome Flous) This is seductive, but restrained. I like the sophistication of the tannins. The intensity. It has finesses and density. It is much less obvious than the Charmes, but for me more edged and it has a vigour. A serious wine. Rating: 19.5 Sarah Marsh MW, The Burgundy Briefing (Dec 2018)

The palest of the Faiveley family's mouthwatering array of grand cru reds, this is almost indecently scented, sensuous and appealing. Red cherry and raspberry fruit flavours combine playfully on the palate, framed by understated oak and crunchy acidity. Drinking range: 2025 - 2030 Rating: 96 Tim Atkin MW - Decanter (Nov 2018)

The Faiveley family are the largest vineyard owners in Burgundy, owning around 120ha, spread across the Côtes de Nuits, Beaune and Chalonnaise and encompassing everything from generic Bourgogne up to the grandest of Grand Crus. Their holdings supply the grapes for 5 out of every 6 bottles made by Faiveley, the balance being bought in from carefully selected contract growers.
