MAZOYÈRES CHAMBERTIN

2017 Grand Cru Domaine Bernard Dugat-Py

EN PRIMEUR

After the Charmes Chambertin, this is more serious. Less flash and flourish, but at its heart is some beautifully focused, darker fruit. More structured, spicier, and still richly velvety, even with just a hint of fruit sweetness. The minerality builds and there is a dusty scrape of tannin. More direct - more restrained for now. A wilder exrpression and more about structural force, impressive length - rather wonderful. Drinking range: 2024 - 2035L&S (Nov 2018)

(from a .25 ha parcel and vinified with ~75% stems). An exuberantly floral nose blends notes of spiced plum, dark cherry, cassis and plenty of humus character along with a background shading of spice wisps. The markedly earthy big-bodied and almost painfully intense flavors flash imposing power on the driving and palate staining finish that also delivers superb length. This is unapologetically old school in style and has the tannic spine to prove it. Drinking range: 2037 - Rating: 93-95 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2019)

The 2017 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru is raised entirely in new oak, including 75% whole bunch fruit. This has a much more expressive bouquet than the Charmes-Chambertin: pure brambly red fruit, crushed stone and touches of rose petal. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, very well balanced and it soaks up that oak with ease, leaving the finish silky smooth and quite sensual. This is probably the best cru from Dugat-Py this year, a stunning expression of this Grand Cru. Drinking range: 2024 - 2048 Rating: 95-97 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2019)

The stems show a little more here in the freshness on the nose. Lots of pepper and restrained dark fruit. That dark restraint on the palate too, more sober and refined, less joyful perhaps than the Charmes. Really elegant and the oak all hidden. Lovely wine. Fine texture and just a slight stemmy note on the finish. Drinking range: 2025 - 2040 Rating: 18 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Dec 2018)

Loïc Dugat-Py makes a pure Mazoyères alongside his Charmes-Chambertin, sourced from two 0.3ha blocks of 40 and 70 years old on stony soils. This is denser and more compact than its stablemate, with more evident whole bunch spice and grip, amazing texture and flavour, scented new wood, and a finish that lasts for a minute or more on the palate. Drinking range: 2026 - 2035 Rating: 98 Tim Atkin MW - Decanter (Nov 2018)

Domaine Dugat-Py, along with only DRC, Roumier, Rousseau and Leroy, is rated in the top Three Star category by the 'Classement' published by the Revue du Vin de France. These are the essence of robust Burgundy, wines of huge scale and concentration. Patience is required, so lay down a few grand bottles for your dotage.
